HENRY VAN DEN BERG, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filed December 21, 1917. Serial No. 208,238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VAN DEN BERG, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to razors and more particularly to safety razors.
An object ofthe present invention is to provide a razor of this character whereby a blade may be readily applied thereto or detached therefrom and the blade having a plurality of cutting edges and each cutting edge being adapted to be presented for use without removing the blade from its holder.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a razor of this character having but comparatively few parts and each part can be readily removed and cleaned, and when assembled the blade will be rigidly retained in place.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the razor embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a portion thereof in section;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blade to be used in connection with the present inven tion- Fig. 5 is a plan view of the guard; and,
Fig. 6 is a detail section through the holder taken at right angles to the section as shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates a handle of any preferred or well known construction having an enlarged upper end 2 which is hollow and having its upper end open. Seated within this enlarged portion 2 of the holder is a block 3 and this block is rigidly retained in place by means of the pin 4. The upper face of this block 3 is provided with a dovetailed groove. This groove is arranged at an angle and its front end terminates flush with the upper edge of the front wall .5 of the holder, whereas the rear end of this groove is closed by means of the rear wall 6. The lower'end 7 of the holder 8 is square in bottom plan view and is dovetail in cross section so as to form tongues which are adapted to rest within the dovetailed groove of the block 3. The forward face of the block 3 is provided with a vertical groove in which rests a spring locking member 9 and this locking member having a projecting end or knob 10 which slides within a slot 11 formed within the front wall 5 of the holder.
From this construction it is obvious that by pulling down on the knob 10 the blade holder 8-will be released thereby permitting the same to be removed from its connection to the block 3. By providing. the double dovetailed tongues 7 these tongues may be inserted within this groove and retained in position so that anyone of the cutting edges of the blade will be presented for use. When the holder is inserted within this dovetailed groove the rear wall 6 prevents the holder from moving in one direction and the looking member 9 when raised will prevent the holder from moving in a forward direction thereby securely locking the holder in place. Formed with the upper end of the holder 8 is a plate 14 which plate is substantially square in configuration and has a guard 15 formed at each edge thereof. The blade 12 v to be used with this safety razor, as better shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, is provided with four cutting edges 17. This blade is provided with a substantially square opening 18 and opening is for the reception 4' u r Hi a or the raised central portion 16 lormed upon" theupper race or the uard plate 14.. Extending through the holder 8 is a bolt 18 and permanently connected to the upper end of this bolt is a locking member 20, This looking member is provided with a plurality'oi arms 21 and the outer end of each arm is provided with a depending end portion 22, The blade 12 is provided with a plurality of: slots 19 which communicate the ope ing 18 and these slots when presented to the right position are adapted to register with the arms 21; In applying the blade to the razor the slots 19 are so arranged as to pass over the arms 21 whereby the blade will rest upon the upper face of the guard plate 1d. By giving the arms a slight turn will assume the position as shown in Fig. 3 and the body portion or the blade will pass under the depending ends of the holder and in this manner the blade will be retained in place without the use or any additional the blade in place or remove the same.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when the blade is secured in position the lower cutting edge as better shown in Figs. 1 and :2 will be presented for use, but when this cutting edge becomes dull another cutting" edge may be presented to use and this unused cutting edge is moved to assume the position of the used cutting edge. In so an ranging the cutting edges the locking memher 9 is released and the holder 8 turned so as to bring the desired cu ti g edge in position for use and then the holder is placed again within the dovetailed groove and locked in position,
Having thus fully described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l, A saf ty razor comprising a handle,
said handle having a dovetailed groove a block projecting from the lower face of said plate, said block adapted to be seated within said dovetail-shaped groove, a look-- ing member carried by the handl for re taining said block within said groove, a squared projection formed with the upper face of said plate, a cutting blade adapted to be seated upon said plate, said cutting blade having an opening therein "for receiving said squared projection formed with the upper face or" said plate, and a locking member detachably connected to said plate said lockin member having a plurality of arms adapted to rest upon the upper face of said plate substantially as for the purpose specified.
2. A safety razor comprising hollow handle, a block seat-ed within the upper end of said handle, an inclined doretail eroove formed within the upper face of said block said handle adapted to close one end or sait groove, a slidable locking member arrangedwithin said handle and adapted to project within one end or said groove, a squar d guard plate, a double dovetailed projection formed with the lower face of said plate and adapted "to be retained within said dove tailed groove, a guard formed with each edge of said plate, a projection formed with the upper face of said plate, a cutting blade adapted to rest upon the upper face or said plate, a detachable locking member secured to said plate and said locking member com prising a plurality ofarms adapted to rest upon the-upper face of said plate substan tially as and 'l orthe purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand J HENRY Will-T DEN BERG.
