SURGICAL KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed November 9, 1916. serial No. 130,334.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Hons DORFER; a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo Lucas county, Ohio. have invented new and useful Surgical Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to simplified sanitary surgical tools.
This invention has especial utility when embodied in handles for mounting replaceable tools.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of an embodiment of the invention as a removable blade surgical knife;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blade;
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the holding member;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view, with parts broken away, showing the coacting position of the holding member key as to the handle;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line VIVI, F ig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 1, disclosing an embodiment of the invention with a changed form of keying seat for the hold ing member;
Fig. 8 is a perspectve view on the handle of Fig. 7 with the blade in position relatively thereto;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the holding member of Fig. 7; and
Fig. 10 is a section on the line XX, Fig. 7.
The handle 1 is provided at its remote terminus with a fiat seat 2 between the opposing ledges 3 and 1, providing opposing seats. At the inner terminus of these seats 2, 3, 4, is an additional seat or ledge 5, extending transversely between the seats 3 and 4.
The blade or tool 6 has the edges 7 and 8 parallel and disposed to coact respectively with the seats 3 and 4 when the connecting side of the blade rests on the seat 2 of this channel seat 3, 2, l. The tool 6 remote from its operative end has the transverse rib or flange 9 coacting with guide or seat 5 when the blade edges 7, 8 are in position in the channel guide 3, 2, 4. With the blade thus in assembled position as to the handle 1, the holding member 10 may have its lateral projection 11 provided with the head 12 brought into position to insert in the slot 13 in the handle 1 so that the narrow portion of the projection 11 may slide in the slot 13 to the enlarged terminus 14 thereof.
With the holding member 10 in this position, it may be rotated upon the pivot bearing 11, 14 to bring one end of the member 10 over the handle coacting portions of the tool 6, this rotation of the member 10 being into alinement with the handle 1 so that the minor projection or seat 16 on the one side of the member 10 may coact with the recess or seat 17 of the handle 1 as this member 10 is moved by engaging the head 18. This rotation of the member 10 into blade coacting position results in a selfkeying of the holding member 10 as to the handle 1 for the projection 11 is rotated in the enlargement 14 so that it may not be removed therefrom through the slot 13.
The holding member 10, instead of being provided with the projection 11 having the head 12, may be provided with projection 19 having the cross piece 20 forming the T- head insertible in the handle 1 by bringing the prongs 20 into registry with the openings 21 and the projection 19' into registry with the larger opening 22. WVith this holding member 10 thus assembled in the handle 1, a rotation of this holding member 10 on its axis 19, 22, willresult in a locking of the blade or tool 6 or 23, to the handle 1 in the same manner as the self-keying of the holding member 10.
There is accordingly produced an instrument of positive structure firmly and rigidly holding the tool which may be any desired design. This tool is most readily removable and mounted with clearance avoiding unsanitary contour forms, the portions of which could in no wise interfere with upkeep or effective use. In providing the ledge or seat 5 with a bevel side. it is more readily cleaned and further the holding member 10 may wedge therein the flange 9 of the tool. The disposal of the tool is centrally of the handle 1.
W'bat is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A handle provided with a channel extending from an end and terminating in a transverse wedge way. a tool contoured to seat in said channel with one end projecting beyond the handle and the other oflset to seat in the wedge way, and a holder coacting with the handle to wedge the tool ofl'set into the wedge '"way and overlap the channel to and n'leanscoacting with the flush side of maintain the tool therein. said tool throughout its width for Wedging 10 2. A handle provided with a shouldered the tool into the seatysaid means including a seat extending from an end thereof to form detachable holder closing said open side of a channeled open side, an imperforate tool the handle and anchored thereto.
