Beit known that I, KARL MAROTZKA, a citi- Zen ot the United States, residing at Youngstown, 1n the county ot' Mahoning and State ot' l Ohio, have invented certain new and uset'ul lmprovements in Tools; and I do hereby de clare the following to be a t'ull, clear, and exact description otl the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in tools, and more particularly to stone-chisels.
The object otl the present invention is to improve the construction ot' a tool which is provided with means for clamping` a removable cutter to an integral jaw which is formed upon the handle.
Another object otl the invention is the production ot' a tool which is simple in construction and comprises a minimum number ot' parts.
A still turther object ot' the invention is the provision ot' means for detachably securing cutting members in an assembled position with the handle portion ot the tool.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements ot' parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention, the removable clamping-jaw being' detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, in side elevation, ot' the tool depicted in Fig. 1, partly shown in vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a plan view otl an embodiment of the present invention, the removable clamping jaw or plate being' detached therefrom and showing a cutter positioned thereon. Fig. i is a sectional view taken on line A B ot' Fig. 3 and showing the removable jaw secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 with the cutter removed.
Referring tothe drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates the handles ot' the differentembodiments, while referring more par ticularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 2 designates the integral jaw formed upon the handle 1. The jaw or cutting-point receiving' end is formed with a flat inner surface, said jaw 2 having a screw-tlu'eaded apertured portion 3, which is provided for the purpose ot' receiving screw l i when it is desired to retain the cutting-point, as 5, in a fixed position with jaw 2 by means ot the removable clamping jaw or plate G. The removable clam ping jaw or plate 6 is provided with a registering'screw-threzuled apertured portion T ot' the same diameter as apertured portion 3. A recessed portion 8 is formed upon the outer end ot' each ot' jaws 2 and 6, producing a dovetailed socket within which the cutting points or members 5 are positioned tor securing the same in a fixed position with the jaws and handle otl the tool. For the purpose ot' forming a positive lock, preventinglongitudinal pla\v ot the removable member 6, the handle 1v upon its movable jawengaging edge is provided with a double or V- shaped inwardly-beveled surface 9, which engages a V-shaped outwardIy-beveled recessed portion formed upon the removable clamping jaw or member l'. Besides positively preventing' longitudinal movement otl the jaw (i b v means ot' the angular-surlaced portion 9 ot' the handle 1 an inclined edge 10 is t'ormed for the purpose otpreventing lateral pla)v ot' the removable jaw on the angular jaw-engaging portion E) ot the tool, said edge being formed at an angle to the horizontal planein which the flat inner surface ot the integral jaw is formed. Fhe beveled inclined jaw or removable plate-engaging edges positivelyv prevents said jaw having lateral or longitudinal play.
Referring to Figs. and JL, the integral jaw 11 is formed by widening the handle 1 at one of its ends. The jaw 11 is provided with screwthreaded portions 1Q, which are beveled at 13 for the purpose otl receiving a portion ot the head ot' screws 11, positioned in screw-threaded apertured portions 12. A removable plate or clamping-jaw 15 is positioned upon theintegral jaw 11 and is retained in position thereon b v means ot' the screws 1i. It will be obvious upon referring to Fig. Jr that by means ot' the peculiar beveling ot the integral as well as the removable jaw that the screws lie tlush with the outer surt'ace ot' said removable plate or jaw. Recesses 16 are formed upon each ot' the jaws, producing a dovetailed portion in the assembled jaws in which removable cutters may be positioned, as in Fig. 3 the toothed cutter 1T and in Fig. l: a solid cutter 18. struction, although producing a durableand efHcient member for assembling with the jaws and handle of a completed tool. It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the removable jaw or clam ping member is provided with beveled apertures which register with the beveled and screw-threaded apertured portions formed upon the integral jaw or widened extension of the handle 1.
The approximately vertical edge 19 of the tool (illustrated in Figs. 8 to 5) is provided with a similarly-constructed central, beveled,
. or substantially V-shaped inclined portion 9,
as depicted in Figs. 1 and Q. `If it is desired, the double beveled or V-shaped edge 9 may extend the entire width of the integral jaw, (illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5,) as is the case with the structure depicted in Fig. 1. The edge 19 is formed upon opposite sides of the portion 9 in the same transverse plane.
-lVhile I have described/in the foregoing description and depicted' in the accompanying drawings the preferred construction of my invention, it will be obvious to one versed in the art to which this invention relates that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be made, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations and modilications as shall fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- -1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle, ajawintegral with said handle, an inwardly, beveled, V- shaped portion formed upon said handle contiguous to said jaw, a removable jaw provided with an outwardly-beveled portion positioned upon said integral jaw, and means for securing said jaws in an assembled position.
2. A device of the character described, comprising' a handle, a jaw integral with said handle, said handle provided. with a central, inwardly-beveled, V-shaped portion, a removable jaw provided with a'central, outwardlybeveled, V-shaped recess positioned upon said integral jaw and in engagement with said similar portion of the handle, and means for securing said jaws in an assembled position.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle, a jaw integral with said handle, said handle provided with a central, inwardly-beveled, V-shaped extension, said handle provided with beveled portions extending in the same transverse plane and upon opposite sides of the V-shaped portion, a removable jaw provided with an outwardly-beveled, V-shaped recess, and edge portions upon each side of said V-shaped recess and formed in the same transverse plane.
4. In a deviceof the character described` the combination of a handle. a jaw integral with said handle, said handle and jaw provided with an integral, central V-shaped portion and with vertical jaw-engaging surfaces extending from said V-shaped portion upon opposite sides thereof, said jaw-engagingsurfaces formed in the same transverse plane, a removable jaw provided with a central V- shaped recess and with vertical, beveled surfaces, said beveled surfaces and V-shaped recess adapted to be secured against the similarly-constructed surfaces of the handle and its integral jaw, and means for securing said jaws together.
