COMBINATION-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed December 18, 1913. Serial No. 807,421.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VOLNEY T. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ness City, in the county of Ness and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful is a specification.
My lnventlon relates to improvements in The body of the razor consists of two members, of thin narrow strips of metal, held together by a pivot, near their back end, and dovetailing together at their fore end, thus forming a blade arm. On one member are two vertical posts on which the blade is hung, the said vertical posts fitting into notches on the opposite member. The blade is duplex and is hung between the body members. The safety plate is a detachable sheet metal at a very insignificant cost, yet
the razor meets all the requirements of a safety razor, and obviates many of the disadvantages of the razors now on the market. The blade is sharp on both sides and reversible. One cutting edge is safely protected between the two members of the arm,
' thus one edge can be strapped, honed and used, till its eliiciency is gone, and the blade reversed, presenting a new keen edge.
My invention contemplates numbering or lettering each cutting edge of the blade, so that the operator may be able to know the sharp edge from the used edge. Moreover,
the parts may be easily cleaned after each operation, by reason of being detachable and simple.
Further details of construction are set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the razor complete; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the safety guard plate; Fig. 3' is a perspective view of the members of the body of the razor; Fig. 4 is a side View of the razor blade; Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view showing the safety plate locking device.
Similar numbers, refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The body; of this razor consists of two long thin narrow strips of metal, 1 and 2 held together near their back end by a pivot 13, about which the two members rotate. The member 1 has two notches 3 in its front edge in register with, and forming seats for the blade holding posts 5 in the member 2. These notches are wide enough to seat the posts 5, and when the two members are locked together the front side of the posts 5 will be flush with the front edge of the member 1. The outer end of the member 1 is cut oblique to dovetail into the groove 7 on the member 2.
The member 2 has, near its fore end, two
On the front edge of each member, and equally distant from the notches 3 or the posts 5 there are teats 4.. These teats are an elongation of the members and are cut away on their under side approximately one half of their thickness. On their under side, and at their back end, there are grooves 16 to accommodate't he shoulder in the safety plate.
The blade 11' consists of a thin steel blade,
sharp on both sides and having four holes 12, two on each side, and of sufficient distance from each other and of sufiicient size to register w'th the posts 5 when desired. Each pair ofholes is located a convenient distance back of its cutting edge, thus making the blade reversible.
The safety plate 8 is a comb plate of thin resilient metal, having a shoulder to compensate the difference of surface of the outside of the body of the razor, and the surface of the razor blade. In this shoulder there is an oblong hole 9 at the bottom of which there is a shoulder 15. The back side of the safety plate is bent slightly down at teeth 10.
its outer corners, thus forming a spring holding the entire safety plate away from the body. When it is desired to lock the safety plate on to the razor, it is necessary for the operator to press down and backward on the center of the plate till the teat 4 passes through the hole 9. When the pressure is removed the spring of the plate will seat the shoulder 15 in the groove 16 on the under side of the teat 4. On the front side of the safety plate there is a series of comb The operation of the razor is very simple. To insert the blade the members are open and the blade is hung on the posts 5. The members are then closed, the oblique end of the member 1 do'vetailing into the end of the member 2. The fact of the blade being between the two members slightly opens the members .at their outer end, and when they are crowded together they form a spring which holds the dovetail together sufficiently secure for all practical purposes. The guard plate is then attached as herein before noted. This guard plate can be instantly removed and attached to either side of the blade as desired.
4 I claim I 1. A razor of the character specified having a body consisting of two thin narrow strips of metal held together by a pivot at one end around which both members rotate and dovetailing together at their fore end when desired, one member having two vertical posts on. its inside front edge and the other member having two notches in register with said posts, both members havingmidway of their notches or vertical posts a grooved lock teat on their outside front edge; a thin steel blade, sharp on both sides,"
having a pair of holes back of each cutting edge; a detachable safety plate having a shoulder to register with the groove in the lock teat on the front side of either member, as desired, all substantially as described.
2. In combination with two rotating blade arm members each having a lock teat on its front side, on the under backside of which thereis a groove, a detachable safety plate of thin resilient metal having a hole through which said teat passes and having a shoulder below said hole in register with the groove on the lock teats; a blade and means of holding it between the blade arm as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A blade arm comprising two rotating blade arm members, the front side of each member having a projection or teat in com- 7 bination with a detachable comb plate having a shoulder parallel with its edges and having in said shoulder a hole through which either of said projections pass, when desired; a blade and means for holding it to the blade arm as and for the purposes set forth.
AHA razor of the character described comprising two mating blade carrying arms pivotally connected and a blade carried thereby, each'arm having a lock groove adj acent its front edge, a separable guard plate having a longitudinal shoulder to abut the front edges of the arms, and having an opening in such shoulder midway between its ends, and a locking element adjacent said opening for, engaging the aforesaid lock groove in the blade carrying arms.
