SNAP-HOOK.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed Februarv l, 1918. Serial 110.214,?95.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES CALLA- This invention relates to improvements in snap hooks used more particularly for chains such as watch chains, neck chains and the like for personal wear. A
The object of my invention is to reduc the expense of construction of snap hooks of this character and provide such a hook that is neat and finished in construction. A
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel, features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. A
In the accompanying drawings: A
Figure 1- is a side elevation ofmy improved hook.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2.2of Fig. 1 looking down onto the inclosing sleeve, showing the lips on the sleeve as engaging corresponding notches in the back member of the hook.
showing the notches formed in the side edges of the backmember of the hook and theinturned lips of the sleeve engaging said.
notches. A
Referring to the drawings, .10 designates the body portion of the hook member, which is preferably formed of half round stock and bent into hook form having an elongated body portion, the same comprising a rigid back member 11 and a spring tongue front member 12.
The lower end of this body portion is bent into eye form at 13.
oppositelyedisposed are provided with site the spring-tongue member 12l. e
In order to prov de a conjven ent means for manipulating this snap hook and also The opposite edges of the back member 11 of this hook e i i in presence of two witnesses. 1 notches 14 at a point substantially oppo- J for providing a protector for the spring tongue, I have formed a sleeve 15 of sheet in order to connect this sleeve member rigidly to the hook member so as to prevent relative movement between these two parts I have provided inwardly-turned-oppo sitely-disposed lips 16 on the upper edgeof this sleeve, which engage the notches 14 formed in the edge of the back member 11, and I also provide inwardly-turned fingers 17 which engage the inner surface of the back member 11 so as torigidly and effectually lock the edges 16 of this sleeve member to the back arm 11 of the hook.
An elongated opening 18 is provided in the upper portion of this sleeve member so as to permit a free movement of the tongue member 12 therein.
The device is extremely. simple, inexpensive and practical in its construction. i
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction of snap hook illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being de- A A fined and limited only by the terms of the Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Flg. 2,
back member and a spring tongue front 1nember,sa1d back member belng provided with recesses formed therein at a point sub- A metal, which is rollecl about the body of the hook into substantially a conical form; and
stantially opposite said tongue, a sleeve in- A closing a portion of said body and having inwardly extendlngllps engaging sald recesses, and fingers engaging the lnner face i of said member tolock said lipsin said re cesses and prevent movementof said sleeve on the hook. i A A CA A In testimony whereof I aflix my signature A A Q J, .OALLAHAN.
