Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 6, 1917. Serial No. 190,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Top-Roll Saddles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in top roll saddles, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a connection between the top or front saddle andthe bottom saddle so that considerable force is necessary to disconnect the two, thus preventing accidental separation of the saddles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a connection located so that in certain positions of the saddles different pressures will be exerted upon the rolls.
Further and other objects will be later herein set forth and of themselves manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a part of a spinning machine, showing the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts of the saddle in different positions, and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a bottom saddle 1 is provided having a pair of spaced depending fingers 2 engaging the rear top rolls a, as shown in the drawings. A lug 3 split at 4: extends upwardly from the bottom saddle. The top saddle includes the usual shank or stem 5 having a lateral lug 6 which latter is adapted to engage the lug 3, and thus restrict sliding movement between the two saddles. The outer or free end of the stem 5 has a head or knob 7 thereon and immediately to the rear of the head a cut-away part 8, forming a key, so to speak, which is of a thickness slightly greater than the space between the fingers 3 which the split 4 of the lug 3 forms. The fingers being separated or spaced are permitted certain movement so as to admit the key 8, when the stem 5 is turned so as to cause the face of the key formed by the cutaway to lie parallel to and opposite to the inner face of one of the fingers 3. Thus considerable force is required to admit the key to the enlarged part 9 of the lug 3. This action of admitting and releasing the key is thus one similar to spreading the fingers 3*, however, slightly, so as to allow the key to snap past the fingers. Accidental separation of the two saddles is prevented, since, as just stated, considerable force is required to separate the fingers to enable the key to pass same, in addition to the fact that the key must be turned to lie at right angles to the position depicted in Figs. 1 and 3 to enable the same to pass between thefingers.
The lug 3 is moreover so positioned that when the parts are in the full line position of Fig. 1, less pressure will be placed on the middle roll a, than when in the position of Fig. 2, in which latter the middle roll is relieved of all pressure, the bottom saddle being reversed in Fig. 2, as compared with Fig. 1, and when the saddle is in the dotted line and reversed position of Fig. 1, greater pressure will be placed on the middle roller.
To obtain the various desired pressures on the middle roll, simply requires shifting or reversal of the bottom saddle, relative to and on the upper or top saddle, in all of which movements it is necessary to turn the lug 6 so asto pass between the fingers 3", and in the case of reversal to move the saddles so as to cause head 7 to abut the fingers, and then turn key 8 to the position where it can be forced from between the fingers 3 The lug 3 and the fingers 2 being located at one end of the bottom saddle throw greater pressure on the roll adjacent which these parts lie.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a top roll saddle, a bottom saddle having a pair of depending spaced roll engaging fingers and an upwardly extending lug between its ends, said lug being split to form a pair of fingers and the bottom part of the split being enlarged, and a top saddle having a stem with a head on the free end of the stem and with a cutaway part forming a key adjacent the head, the key facing downwardly and being of a size so as to require considerable force to move same past the fingers and into the enlarged part of the split.
2. In a top roll saddle, abottom saddle having roll engaging means, a lug extending upwardly from the bottom saddle and formed with a shank receiving opening and a slot leading therefrom to provide spaced opposing fingers, anda top saddle having a shank formed with a head and extending over the bottom saddle the part adjacent the head being reduced in diameter to pass through the slot into the opening of the lug to permit the major portion of the shank being moved longitudinally in the opening of the lug.
3. In a top roll saddle, a reversible bottom saddle having a pair of depending, spaced roll engaging fingers arranged at one end for being interchangeably engaged with the two rear top rolls, a top saddle, and means reversibly connecting the latter to the bottom saddle whereby in one position said fingers will be engaged with one rear top roll and when in its reversed position said fingers will be engaged with the other rear top rollj 4. In a top roll saddle, a bottom saddle having roll engaging means, spreadable fingers carried by the bottom, saddle, and a top saddle having a part of greater thickness than but passable through the space between the fingers so as to effect a spreading of the fingers when inserted therebetween or removed therefrom.
5. In a top roll saddle, a reversible bottom saddle having a pair of depending, spaced roll engaging fingers arranged at one end, for being interchangeably engaged with the two rear top rolls, a top saddle, and means reversibly connecting the latter to the bottom saddle whereby in one position said fingers will be engaged with one rear top roll and when in its reversed position said fingers will be engaged with the other rear top roll, the opposite end of said bottom saddle being engageable in either posit-ion of the latter with the one of said rear top rolls not engaged by the fingers.
