PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY WHITTINGHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
IMPROVEMENT IN TOPS' FOR HEATiNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,535, dated J one 4, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Stove-Top, invented by HARRY WHITTING- HAM, of New York city, in the county and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved stove-top, showing it applied to the upper part of the stove-body. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are vertical sections, showing modifications in the mode of fastening my improved stove-top. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to supply cylindrical and other stoves with ornamental sheet-metal tops, and thereby to reduce the expense of the stoves and their weight without in the least diminishing their usefulness or durability.
Heretofore cylindrical and other stoves hav- 1 ing ornamental tops had such tops invariably made of cast-iron. My invention consists in making such tops of sheet metal, stamping or spinning the same into the requisite raised or ornamental form.
The stove-tops A in the several figures are represented to have receding or projecting moldings or other ornaments formed by spinning or stamping the sheet metalfrom which they are made. They are by suitable means fastened to the stoverbody B. Four'various methods of applying the sheet-metal tops to the stove-bodies are shown in the drawing. Fig. 1 represents the top, to contain a vertical shoulder, a, embracing the upper part of B, and secured thereto by rivets b. Fig. 2 shows the stove-body B, to be provided with a projecting flange, d, which is by rivets e fastened to a fiat portion, f, of the stove-top. Fig. 3
shows brackets g, applied to the body B and cover A by rivets, to connect the parts A B; and Fig. 4:, finally, represents the outer part of A, to be wrapped or rolled over a head or over the turned-out edge of B. Still these several modes of fastenin gs may be varied or modified, and I do not claim nor propose to adhere to any such special mode.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a spun or stamped and raised sheet-metal stove-top, as described.
HARRY VVHITTING HAM.
