Description

J. JEWETT.
Stove.
No. 198,243. Patented Dec. 18, 1877.
NFEYERS, PHDTO-LJTMOGRAPKER, WASHWGTOH. D c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH JEWETT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JEWETT & ROOT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,243, dated December 18, 1877; application filed November 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH JEwErr, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates more especially to that class of heating-stoves which are designed for burning wood, and in which the fuel rests directly upon the bottom of the stove.
In this class of stoves, as heretofore constructed, the base rim or flange is cast in one piece with the bottom of the stove. This is objectionable, as the bottom, in becoming heated, expands, while the base remains cold and resists this expansion, whereby the base is frequently caused to crack.
The object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty.
My invention consists in making the base separate from the bottom, and connecting both in such manner that the edge of the bottom can move outwardly and inwardly on the base as the bottom expands or contracts in becoming heated or cooling off.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a stove provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, representin g the means by which the bottom is secured to the base; and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the body of the stove; B, the bottom O, the base, and D the legs.
The base 0 is made separate from the bottom B, and provided with lugs 6, having radial slots f.
The rim 9 of the bottom B rests upon the upper edge of the base, and is secured to the lugs e by bolts h, which latter are tightened sufliciently to hold the parts together, while at the same time permitting a slight movement of the rim of the bottom on the base.
The bottom B, in becoming heated, expands, and its rim 9 moves outwardly upon the base 0, while, when the fire dies out, the bottom contracts, and its rim moves inwardly upon the base 0, the bolts h sliding in the radial slots f during these movements of the rim of the bottom.
My improved construction of the bottom permits the use of a high base without any risk of the same being cracked by the unequal expansion and contraction of the parts, thereby permitting the stove-bottom to be well raised from the floor without any increase in the height of the legs, and imparting to the stove a neater and more ornamental appearance than heretofore attained.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a heating-stove, the combination, with the tight bottom B, adapted to receive the fuel, of the base 0, made separate from the bottom, and secured thereto in the manner described, so as to enable the bottom to expand and contract, being at the same time securely connected to the base, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the base'O, provided with lugs e, having radial slots f, of the bottom B, made separate from the base, and secured thereto by bolts h, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JOSIAH J EVVETT.
