- My invention relates to heating-stoves in which the downward draught is employed.
- It consists in providing suitable openings through the sides ofthe combustionphamberand ash-pit, below the grate, and covering said openingswith mica, for the purpose of illuminating a room by means of the burning gas.
- Dre presents a conical grate, resting upon the upper end of a hollow column, E, (as in the before-mentioned cooking-range,) the lower end of which projects below the bottom of the combustion-chamber, and forms a flue through which a current of cold air passes upward against the bottom of the grate, from whence it spreads outward and downward (as shown bythe blue arrows) until it reaches the circumference of said grate, and meets the descending current of gas and smoke from the burning fuel, with which it unites, causing the most perfect combustion to take place, and producing a brilliant sheet of flame.

Description
E. HOSFORD.
Magazine Stove.
No. 86,072. Patented Jan. 19, 1869.
fivve'rvl'07 N.PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER wAsHmGToN D C amt ----eeea- ELIHU .HOSFORD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 86,072, dated Janua/ry 19, 18 69,
IMPROVEMENT IN BASE-BURNING STOV'ES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lotte Patent and making part of the lame- To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, ELIHU Hosronn, of Ohicag in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvementin Base-Burning Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear,- and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section on the line xx of fig. 2.
Figure '2 is a horizontal cross-section on the line y 1 a of fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in eachof the figures.
My invention relates to heating-stoves in which the downward draught is employed; and
It consists in providing suitable openings through the sides ofthe combustionphamberand ash-pit, below the grate, and covering said openingswith mica, for the purpose of illuminating a room by means of the burning gas.
In the annexed drawing A represents the cylinder;
B, the combustion-chamber and ash-pit; and
O O, the hollow columns or flues for connecting said combustion-chamber with the hot-air chamber and All of these are similar in construction to and perform the same oilice as like parts in my coal-stove and cooking-range, for'which Letters Patent, Nos. 76,455 and 80,484, were granted me.
Drepresents a conical grate, resting upon the upper end of a hollow column, E, (as in the before-mentioned cooking-range,) the lower end of which projects below the bottom of the combustion-chamber, and forms a flue through which a current of cold air passes upward against the bottom of the grate, from whence it spreads outward and downward (as shown bythe blue arrows) until it reaches the circumference of said grate, and meets the descending current of gas and smoke from the burning fuel, with which it unites, causing the most perfect combustion to take place, and producing a brilliant sheet of flame.
Toenable the process of combustion to be observed, and also to enable the light from the burning gas to be usedfor illuminating the room, a number'of openof the combustion-chamber, and in the door to the same.
I am aware that the use of similar openings in the sides of a stove, above the grate, has long been known, and therefore is not new; but this is believed to be the only instance iii-which said openings have been made below the grate for such a purpose.
Having thus fully described the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application .of the openings F F to the base of a stove, below the grate, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 4th day of January, 1869.
