Description

UNITED STATES PHILO D. BECKWITH, OF DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specilication forming part of Letters PatentNo. 135,621, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILO D. BEOKWIIH, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State ot Michigan, have invented certain novel I mprovements in a Stove; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specih'cation, in which j Figure l is a front view of the stove. Fig.
Y2 is a diametrical section taken from front to rear of my improved stove. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the top plate ot' the stove.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
This invention rela-tes to cert-ain improvements in stoves which are especially designed for burning wood for heating purposes gener'- ally, and which I will now proceed to describe in such a full and clear manner as will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand the improvements.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the base of the stove, which is constructed with an ash-pit, and with dovetailed recesses at the bottom of its ange for. receiving the dovetail-tenons on the legs a. B represents the tire-pot section of the stove. It has an internal iiange, b, formed on its lower end, which is perforated at 'several points for receiving` screw-bolts c through it, the nuts ou which are applied on those portions of the bolts extending down throughthe iiange of base A, outside of the ashpit of the base section, as shown in Fig. 2, thus securing the 1ire-pot section rigidly to the base section. It will thus be seen that shortbolts can be used (which are not liable to to be burned out) for securing the two lower sections A B together in a substantial manner. Superimpor` ed on the section B is a sheet-iron section, C, the lower edge of which is secured on the inner edge of the rabbeted upper edge of section B by means of rivets d, and the upper edge to lugs e, that are formed on the lower edge of a cast-metal ring, E, by means of rivets, as shown in Fig. 2. The ring E presents a fla-nge on its upper edge as well as an external bead, which iiange receives inside of it the lower edge of a sheet-metal section, F, which latter is secured to the ring E by means of rivetsf. The upper edge of the section F is connected to the top section Gr by means of rivets, which pass through lugs g formed on said top section, as shown in Fig. 2.
The legs c are constructediwith dovetailtenons on their upper ends, which are received between beveled lugs n n, and between the outer shoulder or end of each tenon and an annular lip, r, of the bottom plate A a. wedge, h, is driven, which will prevent the leg from casually slipping out of its place. This feature of my invention is clearly represented in Fig. 2.
Wherever I have described the sections as secured by rivets, boltsmay be employed, and if desired rivets may be used instead of bolts and nuts for securing the bottom section to the corrugated lire-pot.
At the back of the pipe-collar J of the top section Gr a register-slide, J, is applied, which slide is perforated at .s s, and intended for regulating the draft of the stove by allowing more or less air to enter the pipe.
Having described my invention, I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The section A and section B, constructed and secured together by means ot' bolts or rivets, and the internal lian ge b, substantially as described.
2. The sheet-metal section C fitted into the i fire pot section B and secured thereto by means ot' bolts or rivets, substantially as described.
5. The sheet-metal sections C and F se cured together by means ofa ring, E, and bolts or rivets, substantially as described.
4.. The top plate or section G secured to the section F by means of lugs and bolts or rivets, as set forth.v
PHILO D. BEOKWITH.
Witnesses:
