Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Joan-sols, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, nd exact description, reference being had to the accompan ing drawings, forming a part of this speci cation.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to rovide a relatively inexpensive roller side caring for railway carsand which iseflicient in op eration and compbsed of few parts. In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of portions of a body and truck bolster of a 0 car showing my improveme'ntsin connection therewith. Referring to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, 10 denotes a body bolster andll a truck bolster, the same being pivotally connected at their centers in the usual manner. As shown, the side hear ing proper, which is designated generally by 5 the reference A, is attached to the up er side of the truck bolster and is adapte to cooperate with a-bearing surface 12 on the underside of a body bolster.
The improved side hearing, as shown, consists of a'hollow, boxdike base casting hav ing a bottom wall.13, parallel side walls 1414 and parallel end walls 15-15, the latter being provided at their upper edges with laterally extended relatively thick .1ianges 1616. p
Mounted within the casting is an antifriction roller 17,the latter being provided with a recess 18 extending transversely therethrough substantially at the center and at rightangles to the axis of the roller. Said recess 18, as clearly appears from Fig.
2, is narrow at the center and is flared upwardly and downwardly on each side, as
indicated at 1919., The recess. 18 is pro vided to accommodate a horizontally ex tending steel sprin plate 20, the ends of which pass throug suitable slots 21' provided in said flanges 16, the slots 21 being downwardly chamfered as'indicated at'22 to facilitate flexing of the spring as hereinafter described. Thespring is slotted at each end as indicated at 23 through which slots ass rivets 24, the slots 23 being provide to permit the spring a limited amount of longitudinal movement.
The side walls 14 of thebasc casting are provided with openings 25 at the bottoms thereof to permit dirt or other foreign matter to be easily washed out and in order to maintain the roller in proper position with respect to the base casting, the latter is pro-- vided with a lug or tooth 26 which coiip crates with a corresponding recess 27 in the lowerportion of the roller.
In operation, as the two bolsters rotate relatively toeach other, the roller will be moved to one side or the other of its c tral normal position and as the roller i thus 'n'ioved, it is apparent that the spfag will be flexed to the general form indicated by dotted lines 28 in Fig. 2, that is, with a reverse curve and fitting against' the curved flaring surfaces 19 of the recess 18. Upon release of the pressure upon the roller, it is apparent that the spring will tend to straighten itself and in so doing, will return the roller to central position and hold it there.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 4, the base casting is shown as 'rovided, with a bottom wall 113, arallel slde walls 114,
and vertical end wal s 115, the latter having inturned flanges 116 at their upper ends by which'the roller-117 is limited in itsmovements, as indicated by the dotted lines. In this construction, the roller 1.17 is provided with a recess 118 near the bottom thereof, which recess is also fleredon opposite sides of the center of the roller, as indicated at 119-119. The recess 11B accommodates a horizontally extending sprin steel plate 120 which extends throu h suite le slots 121 in theend walls of the ase'casting, the spring being slotted as indicated at 123 near e'a'c end to' accommodate the rivets 124 and permitting a limited amount of longitudinal movement of the spring with respect to each rivet, The rivets 124 pass through inwardly extended lugs on the inner faces of the end walls 115 and to facilitate application of the rivets, the bottom Wall 113 of the casting is recessed as indicated at 41 to permit access to the lower ends of the rivets. In this construction also, the bottom wall of the base casting is provided with a lug or tooth 126 which engages in a corresponding, recess 127 formed in the bottom of the roller.
The operation substantially the same as that previously described for the structure illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3;
From the preceding description, it will be noted that the improved side bearing is composed of few parts which may be cheaply manufactured and easily assembled. I urthermore, the springs which pass through the rollers assist in maintaining the latter in proper position and prevent the rollers from twisting with respect to the base casting, a diflicult heretofore experienced in roller side earin where the rollers are not mounted on ax es.
I claim:-

In a side bearing, the combination with a hollow base casting adapted to be secured to a bolster, of a rolling member mounted therein, and means for returning said member to normal after actuation including, a spring element extending through said mem- :plate spring extendin lljer at right angles to the axis of said mem- 2. In a side bearing, the combination with a hollow base casting adapted to be secured to a bolster, of a rolling member mounted within said casting, and a spring plate extending through said rolling member at right angels to the axis thereof and adapted to return said member to normal position after each actuation.
3. In a side bearing, the combination with a base casting, of a roller mountedon said casting, said casting having end walls limiting the movement of said roller, and a plate spring extending through said roller and attached at its ends to said walls, the spring. being slidable to a limited extent with respect to the base casting.
4. In a roller side bearing, the combination with a hollow base casting having upstanding end walls, of a roller mounted within said base casting, said roller having a recess extending transversely therethrou l1, the ends of said recess being flared, am? a and slidably connect at each end thereof with the end walls of the casting.
