Improvement in Parlor-Beds.
PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE GOODRIOH, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT iN PARLOR-BEDS.
Specification forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 127,338, dated May 28, 1872.
I, HORACE Goonnrcn, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachw setts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Parlor-Beds, of which the following' is a 'specific-ation.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in parlor-beds, consisting in the employment' of cog-wheels attached stationary to the shaft, around which the bed is swung. The said cog-wheels gear into smaller pinions attached to a secondary shaft, to which spiral springs or their equivalents are attached for the purpose of raising the bed easily to a vertical position when not in use. The purpose of the gear-wheels and the secondary shaft is to be able to operate the bed with a weaker spring or springs than otherwise would be needed. The head and foot boards are also operated by means of springs so as to relieve the work" of the operator. The forward part of the furniture is made to to swing round on vertical hinges, and, when opened, may be used as a smaller bed or crib for children, or may be used as a sink or table, as may be desired. I
On the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved family bed when closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of thesame when iblded open and ready for use. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the main bed when open.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the drawing.
a. on the drawing is vthe case in which the mainbed bis inclosed when not used. The upper part of the case a. is provided with doors c c, movable on hinges, as shown. The main bed b is made to swing around the center of the shaft d, that is attached stationary to the bed 'b by means of the plates or brackets e e, as shown. In each end of the shaft d is attached a cog-wheel, f. Said cog-wheels f gear into pinions g attached to the secondary shaft h. The shafts d h are both movable in suitable bearings attached to the inside of the lower part of the case a'. Around the shaft It I wind and attach one or more spiral springs, and secure one end ofl said springs to the case af for the purpose of raising the bed Z1 automatically around the shaft d when not needed for use.
I am aware that springs have been used ou the main shaft d for that purpose; but, for the purpose of making lighter springs perform the same operation to equal advantage, I use the wheels f and pinions g in combination with the secondary shaft h, to which the spring or springs are attached.
If the gears f and g are to each other as 1 to 4, for example, I need only one-quarter as strong spring on the shaft h as I would require on the main shaft d to perform the same work. The head-hoard t' is made to turn around hinges k at its lower side, and spiral springs l t, attached to the board i and the brace m, or its equivalents, raise the headboard i automatically to a position, as shown in Fig. 2, as soon as the hook a on the headboard is unfastened from the pin o on the bed b. The same arrangement is used for the foot-board p, that is operated in the same manner as the head-board t'. To one side of the case a is hinged a box, q, by means of vertical hinges fr, as shown, by which means the box q can be swung ont sidewise from t-he case a when the bed is to be used. The box g may be detached aitogether from the case a by making the hinges r male and femalein such a manner that the one may be lifted out from the other. the lower part of the box q for the use of clothes and sundry articles. The top t and front u of the box q are attached together and hinged to the box qby means of hinges c e, so that they may together be swung on 'the hinges o 'u to a position as shown in Fig. 2, when the box q may be used as a crib for children. The drawer s may in this case be drawn out a little, so as to serve as a support for the parts t a. advantage be used as .a sink, table, or chest of drawers by slightly altering the arrangement thereof.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my'invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In combination with the case a. and bed b,
the gears f g, the stationary shaft d, and mov# able shaft h with its spiral or other springs, the hinged head and foot boards i p, and the hinged crib, sink, or table q, as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
