JACOB HOBDAY, JR, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILER-TUBE SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,237, dated May 28, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Boiler-Flue Scraper, invented by JACOB HOB- DAY, J r., of Ansonia, in the county of New Ha- "ven and State of Connecticut.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved fluescraper, partly 1n section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a front-end .view of the portions of the dirt or incrustations of boilerflues by means of the conical wire-scrapers heretofore employed, and hence improved devices have been contrived for the purpose, one of which is formed of serrated plates secured to springs or yielding plates suitably attached to a rod or stem. While this is better adapted to its function, it is objectionable on the score of increased cost and comparative complication and number of parts. The object of my invention is to furnish a finescraper at once simple, cheap, and more effective than those above referred to.
In the drawing I show a rod or stem, A, provided with a conical or rounded head, B, having a ring groove cut in its shoulder, and a conical recessed screw-washer, D, applied to the other end of the said stem. The head B and washer D form holding devices for the double conical spring C. I make the spring angular, preferably triangular, in cross-section,
as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in order to adaptit, by means of a sharp edge, to take hold of and easily remove the deposit on the inner surface of the flues..
By this construction of spring, the laborof cleaning the flues of a boiler is greatly reduced, While a greater perfection of the work is secured. The screw-sleeve or coupling E adapts the scraping device for attachment to long handles or rods.
I claim- An improved boiler-flue scraper, formed of a spring, C, made angular in cross-section, and secured on a stem, A, by suitable holding devices, substantially as described.
JACOB HOBDAY, JR.
