Description

\h a M Jyo. BAUER.
BOILER FLUE CLEANER.
(No Model.)
Patented May 6, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BAUER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOlLER-FLUE CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,456, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed August 1'7, 1889. Serial No. 321,053. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN C. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of 1111-- nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Flue Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a new and useful device for cleaning the scales from the outside of the tubes or fines of multitubular boilers.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the device, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of a set of my boiler-flue scrapers. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another of a set. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line x as in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 illustrates the method of using my device.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, the letters A A denote the shanks of a set of my scrapers, which should be provided with suitable handles B B. From at or near the end of the shank A projects a scraper-blade O, bent inwardly in the form of an arc toward the handle B. The back of this blade is about onefourth of an inch in thickness and the sides form obtuse angles with the back, making the front face much wider. This front face is gouged out or provided or formed with a central recess a, so that the inner face of each side forms a very acute angle with the corresponding side, and thus two sharp scrapingedges 1) I) are formed. The end of the scraperblade 0 is sharpened crosswise to form the edge a. The scraper-blade 0 projects in like manner from the shank A, butis bent outwardly from the handle B. It is. similar in conformation, except that the end of the blade is sharpened to form a longitudinal edge e.
The method of using my device is shown in Fig. 5. The blade 0 is intended to be used to scrape the tops of the tubes or flucs, the
blade O to scrape the under side of the fines, and the edges 0 c are used to remove the scales and sediment from the ends of the boiler. Each blade 0 C has two, scrapingedges, as has been shown, so that they will work equally well in either direction. The scrapingedgcs may be easily sharpened when necessary by simply grinding the sides of the blades. In like manner the edges 0 0'' maybe ground from the back.
The shanks in a set of scrapers should vary in length, as it will be found more convenient to use long-shanked scrapers on the lower fines and those with short shanks on the fines in the upper rows.
I am aware that it is not new to construct. a boiler-flue clean er with a shank and a curved blade having a single central cutting-edge, and such is not claimed by me, my invention consisting, essentially, of a shank having a curved cutter-blade with a central recess and two scraping-blades, whereby the effectiveness of the implement is greatly increased. It will also be seen that the scraping-edgesin my improved device can be sharpened by sim: ply grinding the outside of the blade, which is a great advantage over the old style of.
cleaners, before referred "to, with a single central cutting-edge requiring both edges of the blade to be inwardly beveled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A boiler-flue cleaner consisting of a shank A, having a projecting cutter-blade bent or curved to form an arc and having a central recess a on its scraping-face, two scrapingedges 1) b, and a sharpened point or end, sub stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
JOHN G. BAUER.
Witnesses:
JOHN GAEMODY, Louis BETHKE.
