This invention, relates to undergarments,

and with respect to .itsmore specific features, it is especially applicable to knitted union suits. r

()ne-of the objects of this invention is to enable a garment to be constructed. with the body and leg portions 1 of idilfi'erentpi'eces of fabric Without such weakness'at the seam as has heretofore been present.- Another object is to produces, more prac tical garment in which the body and limb portions are of diderent material, whereby the one may be warmer and softer than the other to compensate for differentdegrees of activity and difierent sensitiveness of the skin of difierent portions of the body.

Another object is to enable a garment of the character described to be joined todid gether in such a way as to utilize the seam to the greatest advantage whereby a firmer joining can be obtained without the presence of a seam so heavy and thick or disposed as to be uncomfortable.

Uther objects will be in part obvious and in partpointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.v

In the construction of undergarments it is desirable that the body portion shall be of warmer material than the leg portions, and

. that it shall present a softer touch to the till skin because of the greater sensitiveness ofthe skin of the body than of that of the legs, and because greater warmthof mate- .rial is desirable. It is advantageous, therefore, that an undergarment shall be constructed with the leg portions made of separate pieces of material from the body portion. that the strains imposed upon the fabric by movements of the wearer if borne by the seam would tend to tear out the seam, unless the seam be made so heavy or be so dis- 9 posed as to be uncomfortable.

This strain runs diagonally outward toward the knee from the crotch to the outer side of the leg, and one of the aspects of this invention comprises the construction of a directionvof this strain.

"While the broader aspects of this invention manifest themselves with whatever material the garment may be made, yet the invention has particular advantages when used in connection with a garment of a knitted material; and furthermore, while this invention is applicable to all garments in which it is desirable to make a leg portion separate from the body portion, it has especial applicability to union suits. The invention is therefore illustrated in its preferred embodiment as a knitted union suit.

lln the form illustrated, the garment comprises. a body portion 1, leg portions 2, and arm portions 3. The courses, that is, the general direction of the thread, in both the body portion and leg portions are most convenlently made transverse to the longitudinal direction of the garment, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The leg portions 2 and the body portion 1 are each, at the point where they are to be joined, cut in a complementary manner bias to the material, that is, diagonally to the courses, froma point substantially opposite the crotch'downwardly to the outer side of the leg in the direction of the strain which has been me tioned. These parts are'joined together so far as the certain aspects of the invention are concerned, it is immaterial what the y a seam. lln

form of scam may be, but it is preferably made a longitudinally elastic seam, especially if the garment be made of lniitted material, in order that the seam may stretch with the material.

A convenient method of constructing the body portion when it is made of knitted material is to form a tubular portion of the same diameter throughout for the full length of the body portion. This may then be appropriately cut for the provision of a seat portion comprising under portion. 10 and flap l1, and to provide the usual front opening closed by a buttoning strip 5- and buttons 4. By constructing the body portion of the garment in this manner, and of a sepa-= rate piece from the leg portions, a considerable saving of material is experienced over garments which require to be mass the full length,and then cut to form the leg portions, as by the latter construction considerable material is cut away and discarded,

By constructing the body portion and leg portions separate, furthermore, it is possible to utilize a different material of different texture for each of these parts, and obviously, so far as the main features of the invention are concerned, it is possible to use any material for either, To provide asoft inner surface for the body portion be cause of the sensitiveness of the skin of the body, it is preferred to make the body ortion of especially surfaced material. l his may be done by embodying on the inner surface of the body portion a loosely spun yarn thereby providing a soft downy surface, The leg portions, on the other hand, because of the less sensitive character of the skin of the leg, may be made of an unsurfaced material which may be advantageously of coarser knit than the body portion.

The seat portion of the garment comprising under portion 10 and flap portion 11 may advantageously have the coarses running horizontally, producing wales, that is, the small ribs produced at right angles to the courses, running longitudinally of the garment. The body portion 1 and leg portions 2, at the front, may be cut away in a more or lesselliptical manner, as illustrated at 7 and the lower ends of the under portion 10, and flap portion 11 may be brought around in under between the legs, with the wales substantially radial to the ellipse, and attached to the body portion at the front by a seam which is preferably an elastic one. Many of the features of this invention are more strongly manifested when used in con nection with the garment in which the rear opening and the front opening are not continuous. With a garment of this description the spreading of the legs produces still added strain upon the material, and thereby causes this invention to have special advan= tages. In the form illustrated, the garment naracse plish the advantages set forth in this specification, as well as other advantages which will be manifest.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the lan: guage used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A knitted undergarment comprising a body portion, a leg portion and a crotch portion, said body portion and said leg portion having the courses running horizontally, said crotch portion being owed to said body portion along a seam forming substan tially an ellipse to which the wales of the crotch areapproximately radial, and said body portion and said leg portion being joined by an elastic seam bias to the fabric, running diagonally downward from the crotch portion.

2. An undergarment of knitted material comprising a body portion and a crotch or tion, said crotch portion being joined to said body ortion by an elastic seam to form substantially an ellipse to which the wales 3f iihe crotch portion are approximately ra- 3.
