To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, l/VILLIAM A. J. Lowe and GEORGE WAYNE Ovnns'rnnnr, citizens of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Window Shades and Curtain Supports, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in window fixtures, and the primary object of the invention is to produce a simple, cheap and effective means whereby a window shade and curtain may be readily supported upon a window casing and retained at a desired vertical adjustment with respect to said casing.

It is a further object of the invention to produce a vertically adjustable window shade and curtain support comprising a telescopic member, the parts being so connected as to positively insure the operative retention of spring shade rollers of various lengths as well as that of a telescopic curtain support which may be removably connected with the device, and whereby the improvement will readily adapt itself to window casings of various widths.

It is a still further object of the invention to produce a window fixture comprising a plurality of telescopic sections, the end sections being provided with brackets to receive the pivots of a spring wound Shade roller, the said brackets being also provided each with a pair of angularly arranged spring tongues designed to frictionally engage in the angular ends of tubular telescopic members comprising the curtain support, the outer telescopic members of the fixture having spring means therebetween whereby to normally force the said outer sections toward each other and consequently effect in not only permitting the longitudinal adjustment of the said fixture as well as the telescopic curtain support associated therewith, but to also exert a sufficient pres sure against the ends of the shade roller to retain the said roller upon the fixture under all conditions.

With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The improved fixture may be broadly designed by the character 7, and, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, comprises a plurality of tubular telescopic sections.

While it is to be understood that any desired number of sections may be employed in the construction of the fixture 7, we have illustrated the same as comprising only two such sections, indicated for distinction by the numerals 8 and 9 respectively, the section 8 being received in the section 9. The sections 8 and 9, adjacent to their outer ends, are formed with angularly disposed brackets 10 and 11 respectively, the said brackets being provided with suitable openings to receive the pintlcs of a spring wound shade roller 12, having the usual shade 13 thereon. The brackets 10 and 11 are, of course, arranged upon the underface of the fixture 7 and are disposed vertically with respect to the casing 1. Each of the brackets 10 and 11, upon its outer face is provided with a pair of angularly disposed spring tongues 1414=, the said tongues, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, extending angularly toward the center of the fixture and each pair of tongues is adapted to exert a tension in an outward direction from each other. Each pair of tongues 14 is adapted to frictionally engage in the angular ends 15 of a curtain supporting member 16, the said support comprising a plurality of tubular telescopic members, two of such members 17 and 18 respectively being illustrated in the drawings, it being obvious, however, that any desired number of sections may, if desired, be employed.

Upon the outer ends of the sections 8 and 9 are arranged ornamental head members 2424 which in the preferred embodiment of the invention are independent of the said sections 8 and 9 and are each provided upon its inner face with a lug 25, and to these lugs are secured the opposite ends of a helical spring 26', the said spring being directed centrally through the tubular sections 8 and '9. The spring 26 is of sufficient strength to at all times force the sections .8 and 9 to a telescoped position, or rather to "force the said members 8 and 9 toward each other, .consequently forcing the sections comprising the curtain support toward each other, and-so permitting of the employment of the fixture uponwindow casings of various widths, the movement of the sections of the fixture being limited by the contacting engagement of the bracket members 10 and 11 with-the shoulders upon the'pintlesof the shade roller 12.

In Figs. 2 and 3 we have illustrated a slight modification, in which the fixture 27 comprises two end members 28-'28 and a central or sleeve member 29. The inner ends of the members 28 have secured thereto a helical spring 30, thesaid spring exerting a tension to draw the" sections 28 inward of the said tubular section 29. The outer or end sections 28 are provided withdepending brackets 3l3l to receive the pintle or shaft of the spring shade roller and with the angularly disposed spaced spring fingers '8282 to engage with the angular ends of A curtain support comprising a tube, sections slidably received in the ends of the tube, a spring connected with the sections and "housed in the tube, spring fingers mounted on the sections and disposed at acute angles with relation to the longitudinal dimensions of the sections, the fingers on one section converging toward the fingers on the other section and a longitudinally extensible element having end portions adapted to receive the fingers.
