- Application filed m 22, 1924. SerialNo. 727,535.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WENDELL P. HAMMnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Leon, in the county 'of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Shade Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates'to certain improvements in window shade supports and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of thisgeneral character embodying novel and improved means which may be readily assembled in working position and which may be employed to advantage for the support of shades, curtains and drapery.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two elongated members telescopically engaged one with the other together with brackets carried by each of said members with which a shade is adapted to be directly engaged together with a member removably engaged with the brackets to support draperies or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts .of my improved window shade support whereby cer-' tain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and'advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be' the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a-view in top plan of a window shade support constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4-. is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in top plan illustrating in detail the connection of a rod section and an arm of a bracket;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a bracket unapplied.
As herein disclosed, my improved support comprises two substantially flat elongated members 1 having their longitudinal margins defined by the inturned flanges 2. whereby the inner end portions of said members are telescopically engaged one with the other whereby the same may be relatively moved to effect the desired adjustment as the occasions of practice may. require.
Associated with the outer end portion of each of the members 1 is a bracket B comprising an arcuatearm '3 provided at one end with an angularly disposed extension 1 adapted to be telescopically engaged within the adjacent end portion of a member 1 and preferably held therein by friction. This extension 4 is preferably at right angles to the arm 3. I
The arm 3 in its inner portion is provided with an opening5 in which is adapted to be engaged a mounting for a curtain roller while the outer end portion of said arm 3 is provided with an opening 6 through which is adapted to be disposed the shank 7 of a holding member 8. At a point substantially midwayof the openings 5'and'6 the arm 3 has struck therefrom the tongue 9 providing a hook member with which is adapted to be freely engaged, a loop 10 carried by the end portion of a flexible member 11 herein disclosed as acoil spring.
Interposed between the outer end portions v are the telescoping rods 12 I of the arms 3 the outer ends of each of which having secured therein a filler block 1 1 with'which I the shank 7 has threaded engagement whereby the holding member 8 serves to efiectively maintain such-rod attached to an arm 3.
In practice, the tension of the flexible member 11 is such as to firmly maintain an applied shade roller in applied position but not hindering or interfering with the requisite rotationof such roller.
In practice, the rods 12 are employed in connection with lace curtains while the flexible member 11 is for use in connection with drapery although I do not wish to be under-' stood as limiting myself to such particular usages. I
The members 1 are maintained in applied position through the medium of theloops 15 each of which straddling a member 1 and secured by screws 16 or the like to the top of a window frame or casing.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a window shade support constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to' be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed;
1 claim s 1. A support of the class describedcomprising two telescopically related members, outstanding arms carried by the outer end portions of said members, said arms being provided with openings to provide mountings for a sash roller, rods interposed between said arms out ardly of said openings, said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end portions or the rod to the arms, and a flexible member conne'e the arms between the openings and the rods. 2. A support of the class described comprising two telescoi ically' related members, outs "riding arms carded by the outer" end portions of saio members, said arms being provided with openin s to provide mountings for a sash roller, rods interposed between said arms outwardly of said openings, said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end JOI'tlODS ot' the rods to the arn'is, and a coil spring connecting the arms between the openings and the rods.
3. A support of the class described comprising two telescopic-aliy related members,
outstanding arms carried by the outer end portions of said members, said arms being provided with openings to provide mountings for a sash roller, rods interposed between said arms outwardly of said openings, said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end port-ions of the rods to the arms, and a flexiblev member connecting the arms between. the openings and the rods, each. of said arms having an angnlar extension telescopically engaging an outer end portion of a member.
l. A support of the class described com prising two telescopically related members, outstanding arms carried by the outer end tween said arms outwardly of said openings, 7
said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end portions of the rods to the arms, said arms between the openings and rods being provided with hooks and a flexible member engageable with said hooks. o
5. A support of the'class described comprising two telescopically related members, outstanding arms carried by the outer end portions of said members, said arms being provided with openings to provide mountings for a sash roller, rods interposed between said arms outwardly of said openings, said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end portions of the rods to the arms, a flexible member connect ing the arms between the openings and the rods, and a supporting loop for each of the members.
6. .Lsupport of the class described com prising two telescopically related members, out-standing: arms carried by the outer end portions or said members, sa d rms-b-emg provided with openings to provide mount-V mgs for a sash roller, rods interposed be-.
tween said arms outwardly of said openings,
said rods being telescopically related, means for securing the outer end portion of the rods to the arms, a flexible memberconnect ing'the arms between the openings and the rods, and securing means associated with each of the members and permitting endwise movement of the members.
In testimony whereof Ihereunto aflix my signature; 7
WENDELL P. HAMMERS.
