Description

E. L. WHITE.
LIGHTING FIXTURE.
APPLICATION'FILED AUG-28. 1911.
1,270,081 I Patented June 18, 1918.
HIS A TTOR/I/EYS Toall whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. WHITE, 01? BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
. Be it known that I, EDWIN L. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough ofBrooklyn, county of Kings, in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to li hting fixtures, and particularly to holders or light transmitting shades or bowls of the character illustrated and described in my application filed May 19th, 1917, Serial No. 169,610, the present invention being an improvement upon that device. Holders of this character .prior to my'said earlier invention had been made comprising a ring-shaped top adapted for connection with a socket cover or shell provided with set screws for clamping the ring, and with two downwardly extending oppositely bowed arms connected at their upper ends to the ring by solder or rivets and at their lower ends in the same manner to a dish-shaped bottom, which holders were placed inside the bowl whose bottom rested within a cup secured to the inner dishshaped member. My prior application above referred to relates to providing a strong and secure attachment of the arms to the top ring, and an unbreakable connection .between the lower ends. of the arms in such manner as to render the employment of the the old style of bottom connection may be used, the object of my present invention being to provide means for connecting the holder directly to a lamp-socket dispensing with a cover for the socket and the set screws required where the upper ends of the arms of the holders have been attached to a ring connected to a socket cover or shell.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the upper portion of one of the arms.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other arm.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the coupling ring.
Fig. 6 is a cross section of the coupling ring on the broken line 6-6 Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of a lamp socket.
Fig. 8 is an elevation partly in section showing the parts assembled as in use, and
Specification of Letters Patent. PatentedJune 18, 1918.
Application filed August 28, 1917. Serial No. 188,548. I
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary section in enlarged size to more clearlyillustrate the holder as clamped to the socket.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
10 and 11 denote two oppositely disposed and more or less bowed arms each provided at its upper end with a horizontal semicircular extension 12, these extensions being oppositely curved on the respective arms.
Each arm for a predetermined distance below the extension is preferably bent vertically in a straight line and somewhat fiattened, the semi-circular extensions also being preferably flattened; the ends of these extensions meet forming a ring. These curved portions are preferably made intogral with the arms, but may be madeseparate and attached in any suitable manner.
The lower ends of the arms 10 and 11 are preferably bentand secured within recesses in the hub 13 as shown and described in my aforesaid application.
14, indicates a bowl the bottom of which rests within or upon the cup 15, which is provided with a central hole for the passage 3 18, denotes a lamp-socket of the ordinary character, provided at its lower part with an annular rib 19.
20, indicates the coupling ring by means of which the globe holding device is connected to the lamp-socket 18.
This ring is of sheet metal with outwardly curved lower part, and is preferably pro vided with an inturned annular flange 21 at the top, and annular rib 22, at the bottom to give rigidity and strength.
Between the top of the ring and the bottom rib thereon, a plurality of spaced U- shaped cuts are made, forming a plurality of spaced spring fingers 23.
Each of these fingers is provided on its inner surface with a transverse shoulder or projection 24. These projections are formed by bending the fingers inwardly at or near their longitudinal center and then outwardly, thus leaving the lower ends of the fingers curved outwardly as shown.
In connecting the bowl holding device to the socket, the ring 20 is first placed over the lower end of the socket 18, This end of the socket is then passed between jthe semi circular extensions 12on the upper ends of the arms and ll iiherebeing 'sufficient semi-circular extension thereon, after which 12, when they spring inwardly, the :proj'ec- -.-tions '24: catching under'the bottom edges venting any possibility of thesocket being pulled; out until the coupling ring- -is released.
the ends. of the semi-circular extensions are .again brought together with their under :surfaees seated?" upon the top of the "rib 19.
The ring 20 is then pressed idOWIlWfiId over the. semicircularextensions" 12, the: spring fingers 23 cbeingwcompressed'sin so doing until'theiprojections Qlflpass the extensions -.of::the1semi-circular extensionslocking them together with the lamprsocket clamped between them; the rib I 19 on lthesocket pres25,indicatesan electric'lam p; 1 5
I have illustrated my --improvement :in con nection-with alsuspended lam-p-socket; but it is r. also applicable to ceiling lights or upright or portable fixtures without change -where such :fiXt-ures are already installed.
I claim as-my invention:
