To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, WALTER R. .IIAHNS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Candle Cups for Lighting- Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of electric lighting fixtures giving a candle effect, in which a hollow cylinder containing a lamp socket is employed to represent the candle, the switch being operated either by a chain pull or by a transverse push pin projecting through slots in opposite sides of the cylinder at its lower end which rests within the top of the socket shell projecting below the cylinder and at the bottom of which shell projects an interiorly threaded stud for attachment to a fixture. The object of my invention is to provide a cup for the lower end of the candle cylinder which also forms a cover for the shell of the socket, giving the fixture a greatly improved appearance and increasing the candle effect. The invention consists essentially of two separable members which are hereinafter particularly described.

10, indicates the candle cylinder, the lower end of which contains a socket. 11, denotes a push pin for operating the socket switch. This pin extends through slots in opposite sides of the candle cylinder. 12, indicates the socket shell within the upper part of which the lower end of the candle cylinder rests. 13, is an interiorly threaded stud connected with the socket and extending below the shell 12, to be screwed upon the threaded end of a tube or pipe 14 extending from a chandelier, wall bracket, or other lighting fixture.

The interior surrounding this opening is slightly depressed forming a seat for the lower end of the stud 13, and producing a boss 17 on the exterior ofthe member 15. Adjacent its top this member has an annular inturned and upwardly curved flange 18, leaving an opening of a size to fit snugly over and around the upper part of the shell 12,.and thereby entirely cover said shell.

19, indicates the top member of my improved device. This member has a general appearance to that of the-top of an old fashioned candlestick. It. is formed of one piece of sheet metal and provided with a central opening 20, from which the metal is pressed downwardly forming a collar 21 of a size to fit snugly over and around the candle cylinder 10. From the opening 20, the metal is flared and its outer edge is overturned which not only strengthens this member, but adds materially to its artistic appearance.

In opposite sides of the collar or downwardly turned portion 21, of this member 19, when a push pin is employed, there are formed vertical slots 22, open at the bottom. In cases where a chain pull is employed, it will only be necessary to provide one of the slots for the passage of the lever arm to the end of which the pull chain is attached. The member 19 is placed upon the candle cylinder 10, over its top end and is pushed down until the bottom edge of this collar 21, rests upon the top edge of the socket shell 12 and within the annular flange 18 on the other member; the end or ends of a chain pull lever or pin 11 extending through one or both of the slots 22, in said collar.

When the parts are assembled upon the fixture, the cup has the appearance of being formed of one piece, and the push pin or lever for operating the switch coming underneath the flared portion of the cup does not detract from the artistic appearance of the fixture. By making the cup of two separable members and of the peculiar formation described, it provides for ready attachment, and easy manipulation of the switch, at the same time forming a cover for the projecting portion of the socket.

The collar portion 21 of the upper member fits the cylinder 10 sufiiciently tight to hold it in position by friction.

I claim as my invention:

1 A cup for a combined candle cylinder and socket of the character described, consisting o1 two separable members, one member forming a cover for the socket shell, the other member connecting with said first member and providing for the passage of the switch operating member.

2. A cup for a combined candle cylinder and socket of the character described, consisting of two separable members, one member having an inturned and upwardly curved flange atthe top fitting the rim of the socket shell and forming a cover for said shell, the other member surrounding the lower part or the cylinder, being seated upon the top edge of thesocket shell within the annular flange of the other member and providing for the passage of the switch operating member.

3. In a lighting fixture, the combination of an elongated cylinder, an electric socket fitted within said cylinder and projecting therefrom at its lower end said socket being provided with a push pin extending through slots in two opposite sides of said cylinder, a cup consisting of two separable members, one of said members forming a cover for the Copies of this patent may be obtained for projecting portion of the socket, the other member surrounding said cylinder and connecting with said first member, and provided with slots on two opposite sides for the passage of said push pin.

In an electric lighting fixture, the combmation of an elongated cylinder provided with slots on two opposite sides, an electric socket fitted within said cylinder and provided with a push pin extending through said slots, said socket projecting from the lower end of said cylinder, a cup consisting of two separable members, one of said members having an annular inturned and upwardly curved, flange at its top fitting the largest circumference of the projecting portion of said socket and forming a cover for said projecting portion, the other member surrounding the lower part of said cylinder,

being seated upon the top edge of the projecting portion of said socket within the annular flange on the other member, and having slots on two opposite sides for the passage of said push pin.
