specification of Patent.

To all whom it may, concern."
Be it known that l, Bonner L. Warrants, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Charlotte, in the county of ll/lecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Match-Stands, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention is an improvement in match stands, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified wherein a holder is provided for matches of transparent material, so that the matches are visi ble through the holder, and wherein advertising matter may be arrangedwithin the holderto be visible through the same, the holder being closed at its top and having a change compartment at the top and at its bottom a hopper through which is slidahle a lunger having grooves for receiving indivi ual matches to remove them from the holder, the hopper being held in place by the plunger which is removable to permit the removal of the hopper to permit the insertion of matches.
in the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved'holder;
Fig. 2 is'a vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a similar section at'right angles to'Fig.2; 7:
Fig. 4 isa perspective view of the plunger with one of the heads removed;
Fig. '5 is a partial longitudinal section ot one end ofthe plunger.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a holder is provided, consistingof a" casing 1 of glass or other suitable material open at its bottom, and closed at its top, and supported by a suitable base 2 which is integral therewith, the said base being ornamental and hollow, as shown, so that'the'intill lih
terior of the holder may be communicated with through the base.
The closure 3 at the top of the holder is integral with the casing, and is in the form of a change tray, having its deepest portion at the front of the holder. The body or casing l of the holder is integral with the base, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2
,andB, and the said body is of the same cross section throughout, and the matches are introduced through the open bottom of the holder.
The holder has circular openings 4 in as which fits over the split end. 1 lhere is Suficient resiliency to hold the handle in place.
ll. hopper is arranged within the holder, and the said hopper has a substantially cylindrical portion 8 at its bottom, through which the plunger 5 is slidable, the said cylindrical portion being adapted to register with the openings 4 to permit the passage of the plunger, and the hopper is retained in place bythe plunger. I Bearings d are arranged in the openings 4: for the plunger 5, each bearing having a flange at its outer end r engagin the end wall of the holder. The opper-"is o a length corresponding apprommately to that of the body of the holder, and of a width at its widest parts such that the side walls thereof will ongage with the side walls of the holder; and the matches in the holder are thus deflected down upon the upper surface oi the plunger. At oneend the lunger has oppothe communication between'the body of the hopper and the cylindrical portion a match will find its way into the groove so that when to v the plunger is withdrawn and turned to bring the groove beneath the plunger the match will fall out,'as indicated in Fig. l. The plunger is also provided with longitu= diually extending grooves ll, insuficient in depth to receive a. match, and the said llllll time it is visible through the glass. But a I single match may be withdrawn atone operation, and the device thus acts to save the matches. lit will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. ?/that at the ends of the cylin- T mg in its end walls registering circular head detachably connected therewith permitting the removal of the plunger when and open at its bottom and having openings, a hopper having a cylindrical portion at its bottom adapted to register with the openings, alonger movable through the openings an through the cylindrical portionof the hopper, said plunger having oppositely arranged grooves at one end for receiving a match to remove the same from the holder, the ends of the plunger havin a or the head is detached to permit the removal of the hopper, said hopper being held in place in the holder by the plunger.
2. A device of the character'specified, comprising a holder of transparent material consisting of a body substantially rectangular in cross section and closed at its top a hollow base at the bottom, said body of the holder having in its end walls registering circular openings, a hopper a cylindrical portion at its bottom adapted. to register with the openings, and a plunger movable through the openings and through the cylindrical portion of the hopper, said plunger having oppositely arranged grooves at one. end for receiving a match to remove the same from the holder.
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a holder of transparent material consisting of a body substantially rectangular in cross section and closed at its top and open at its bottom and havin a hollow base at the bottom, said body of t e holder having in its end walls register-i circular openings, a hopper having a cylin rical portion at its bottom adapted to register with the openings, and a plunger movable through the openings and through the cylindrical portion of the hopper, said plunger having oppositely arranged grooves at one end for receiving a m to remove the same from the holder, and having longitudinally extending grooves of lesser depth for straightening the matches.
4. Adevice of the character specified, comprising a holder closed at its top and open at its bottom, a hopper having a cylindrical portion adapted to fit within the bottom to close the same, said holder having openings at the ends of the cylindrical portion for receiving a plunger to hold the hopper in place, the p unger having grooves for receiving individual matches.
