This invention relates to a container for reeds and particularly to an improved container or holder especially designed for such reeds as used on Saxophones.

When these reeds are used they become wet and, as they dry, they have a tendency of distorting and thus becoming useless. It is therefore necessary to retain the reeds in a flat condition in order that they may be serviceable.

An object of the invention is to provide a reed container in which is provided means for holding the reeds against a rigid flat surface in such a manner that the reeds are not only supported and held against accidental injury but are also so held in position that the flat sides of the reeds are preserved in a perfectly flat position.

A'further object is to provide a container or holder for such reeds in which one or more of the reeds may be inserted and held in proper position regardless of the number of reeds in the container.

A still further object of the invention is to provide such a container which is sanitary and in which the part providing the surface against which the reeds are held in a flat position may be removed from the container and readily washed or cleaned.

As indicated in the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a case having a cover 6 which is hinged to said case and provided with a common snap'lock 1 adapted to engage a projection 8 on the case. The case 5 is formed to provide therein an elongated recess 9 having end walls I0 in which are therethru, the walls of which are tapered as at I! at each side thereof. Grooves l8 are provided in the ends of the opening and the plate I9 is positioned therein.

It can be clearly seen that, in the use ofthe device, the reeds can be inserted in the con- 7 tainer at either side of the flat plate. The reeds are inserted into the container with their fiat side against the plate, and the back of the reeds will engage the tapered portion of the walls so that each reed may be individually adjusted to press against the side of the plate.

In the modified form shown, the reeds may :be inserted from either side of the frame.

In the use of my invention, the fiat plate is preferably made of glass and is easily removable from the container so that it may be washed when desired. It is to be understood that in the use of these reeds they become wet with the player's saliva and, when inserted in a container in that condition, these reeds have a tendency to become warped while they are drying. When inserted in the container herein described however, they will dry against the flat surface of the plate and thus be preserved in a'fiat'condition.

I claim:

1. A container for reeds of the character described having a recess and a flat plate removably mounted within said recess, said container comprising side walls and means on said walls for retaining a reed against the said plate.

2. In a container of the character described, a case having a recess, grooves in the walls of said recess; a flat plate removably mounted in said recess and positioned therein by said grooves, and means on said walls for retaining a reed against said plate.

3. A container for reeds of the character described comprising a case having an elongated recess therein, grooves in the end walls of said reoes's, a rigid plate slidably mounted in said recess and positioned by said grooves and tapering surfaces in the side walls of said case adapted to adjustably position and retain a member against said plate.

4. A container for reeds of the character described comprising a recess and having substantially rigid flat walls extending across said recess and, a rigid plate removably mounted therein and tapered surfaces in the said walls adapted to wedge reeds inserted in said case against the said plate.

5. A container for reeds of the character described comprising a case having a cover, an elongated recess in said case, grooves in the end walls of said recess, a plate vertically and removably mounted in said recess, extending across the same and positioned spaced from the side walls of said case by said grooves, and surfaces on said walls tapered inwardly towards said plate for adjustably retaining a member against said plate.

6. A container for reeds of the character described comprising end and side walls, a rigid plate extending across said container and removably mounted centrally between and spaced from said side walls, and tapered surfaces on said side walls tapering towards the said plate.

7. A container for reeds of the character described comprising substantially rigid walls, a rigid plate of glass or like material removably mounted centrally between and spaced from said walls, and tapered surfaces on said walls tapering towards said plate and adapted to retain a member against the said plate at each side thereof.
