It is one of the objects of the presentin-y vention to provide an ink ystand combining. y one or more inkwells and-a penholder support, the latter being adapted to automatically control the opening and closing of 'thev link wells by`the deposit of penholders on or the removal of penholders fromthe penholder support.

Another object of the invention is to prof vide for the adjustment ofl the penholder support so that its balance may be varied to compensate for the dierence in the weight of a penholder or penholderswhichmayy be applied'to thesupport so that the automatic closure or opening of the covers of the ink Another object of the present invention is to provide ymeans for controlling the dip of a pen intothe ink well, and a further objectof'the invention is to provide a removable ink cell or cells inl combination with a l base for the stand, wherebyv the ink may beV replenished in the inlrcell without affecting the adjustment of the dip .controlling device,iirrespective of the position of the cover .or closurefor the ink well.

Une offthe important features of the pres- .ent invention resides in the provision of Suitably secured to which are pivoted centrally upon a shaft or pivot. 9 mounted, in upright bearings 10 which maybe of suitable design and convstruction and are here shown in the form of invertedU-shaped members l1, thetops of which are depressed or formed with recesses as at 12 to afford support for eXtrapenholders, pencils or the like, as may be desired. VThe arms 8 of the penholder support may be connected in any suitable manner, and are arranged to project forwardly over the covers 6 of the ink well and are here connected at their rearwardly extending portions by a transverse bar 13 which in part performs the function of being a weight to somewhat counterbalance the" -forwarding projecting arms 8 of the support. The arms 8 are shown as provided with concaved upper edges to form a convenient recess to receive and support one or more penholders, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the deposit of which on or the removal of which from the support is designed to control the opening or closing of the covers of the ink well. Thus when a single penholder is deposited onthe arms 8 `this will be suflicient to cause the karrnsf to swing down and through their conhere shown fory the purpose, for instance, of'

receiving diiferent colors of ink, it is Obvious that only one well may be utilized. When a plurality of ink wells are incorporated in the ink stand to receive inks of different colors, ordinarily there would be a dierent penholder for each different color of ink, and thesepenholders would be normally deposited upon the support, and for the purpose ofproviding for the excess weight of a. plurality of penholders, and also for providing vfor the varying of the balance of the pen support in accordance with the weight of the penholder or penholders mounted on the support, suitableweight-adjusting means is provided. This adjustment may comprise, for instance, a weight 15 which is shown as provided with a set screw 16, the weight being adjustable upon and along one of the rearwardly extending arms of the support,

Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for controlling the. depth of a pen into the ink well, and in the form shown this means comprises a stop plate 17 extending downwardly into the well below the cover 6, the plate having an upwardly extending shank 18 disposed adjacent to one side of the ink well, and which shank may be offset as at 19 and provided with `a yoke or slide portion 20 which in this instance embraces one of the upright posts of the U-bearing 11 and is vertically adjustable along the bearing to the desired position at which it is intended to limit the insertion of a pen into the well. The plate may be held at its adjusted position through vany suitable means, and in this instance there is attached to the upright member vof theU-bearing a spring 21 which frictionally .engages an adjacent portion of the yoke 20 and thereby secures the temporary adjustfit upwardly through the open bottom of the' chamber into which it is to be inserted, and is held therein through anv suitable fastening device, as, for instance, a` draw slide 23 which is insertible through afront aperture 211 formed in `the lower yportion ofthe base 2, the rear'end of the slide being adapted to enter and bear in` av seat 25 onk the opposite wall ofthe chamber 3. bviously there may be provided as many of the ink well receiving chambers as is desired, and any suitable means mayvbefemployed for retaining the removable vcells in position in the wells,

There may be secured at any suitable position upon the base 2 an ink wiper 26 in theform of apiece of cloth of suitable properties which may be removably clampedbeneath a wiper holder 27 shown in the form of a. transverse bar appropriately connected to the portion of the base ofthe stand'upon which the wiper is to be mounted. After the piece of cloth or wiper 26 is lsoiled it may be thrown away and a new piece readily fitted in position beneath the holder 27. lf desired the top of the base 2 may be provided with a sunken portionA 2S to receive pins, pen nibs, paper fasteners or any other small devices which may be desired to have handy.

What is -claimed as new-is: Y

1. A combined pen-rack and ink-well comprising a base having well pockets, covers hingedly mounted to cover and uncover the pockets; parallel standards onthe base having each a top bar to mutually support penholders and pencils or like shaped bodies laid from one to the other; a rock shaft supl ported in the front elements of the standlevers extending between the standards andv below top bars thereof and being rigidly connected; aweight slildably mounted on the rear end of one lever; and links connected .to the front ends of the levers and to the swinging edges of the respective covers; whereby the weight of a penholder on said leverswillclosethe covers.

The combination, inan ink-stand, of av base having a well; a lid hinged tocover' and uncover the Well; a pair of substantially horizontal, parallel levers pivoted intermediate their ends on a rook shaft, the front arms of the levers concaved to mutually support a penholder; sldable means on one of the arms for overbalancing the front arms; and a link connected at one end to an adjacent armrand at the other to the lid so that it Willfbe closed by the Weight of a penholder applied to the front arms, the lever being rigidly connected to act in unison.
