Specification of Letters Patent.
J. AQLON- of Great Britain,
residing at Springfield, inthecoimty of Hainpden, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new' and ments in. Elastic-Fluid Turbines, thefollowing. is a specification.
The present invention fluid turbines of the type rality of' whee'ls mounte noz'zle diaphragms, locate form stages, and particu useful Improves to elastic comprising a plu on-a shaft with between them to rel t rly to such turbine's where there is a single wheel per stage. In connectio withthe constructionof such turbines, s desirable. wheelsran as this gives a light compact structure,
. e to form both the Phragms of sheet .material,
and
one which isicheap to'build. The stresses set up in the hubof a turbine wheel are of considerable magnitude, and one of the chiliculties heretoforelexperienced with sheet metal; wheel structures has been. to obtain a suificiently strong and rigid connection between the wheels and theturb. ae structures there is ing between each and, throu h these depends diameters, the greater greater the shaft; In such provided a pack diaphragm and the shaft, f"- course, the amount of leakage upon thepacking the diameter the, leakage owing to the greater circumference through which leakage may occur.
- The object of the present invention ist oprovide an improved turbine structure wherein the wheel structures ar'e rigidly connected to the shaft, and in which the packing diameters are re duced to a minimum to keep the leakage losses as low as possible. For a consideration of In the drawing, View of a-portion of a divided;

3 Application filed September 13,1917. Seria1No.191,1 i7.;
the present inventiodand further. description is accordingly considered unnecessary. .1 y suitable structure'inay be used. The d 'aphragm structure indicated in thepresent instance is described and claimed in the application of myself and {Edmund M. Phillips, Serial No. 206,728, filed Dec. 12, Located in. each stage is' a turbine wheel carrying a ring of blades 7. The wheel is formed of two plates of sheet nate rial 8 and 9 provided with inturned, flanges .10 at" their peripheries which hold the buckets in place. The outer poi-tire of the plates are held in spaced relation to each other at their peripheries by suitable spacing. members 11 through which eXtendrivets the shaft the plates -.8 and 9 are in contact with each other, as indicated at 13, and are provided with shoulders 14 and' flanges 15 which form annular recesses 16 for the reception of holding rings 17.
which are forced over the flanges 15 and are riveted to each other as indicated at 18.
According to my invention 1 tie the wheel hubs of adjacent stages together-in pairs by means of an intermediate ring 19 formed integral with the adjacent holding rings 17. The rings 19 make a tight fit with the shaft 1 and are also keyed to the shaft along with the adjacent wheels on each side thereof by a key 20. .This gives a strong rigid hub structure which is firmly anchored to the shaft and is able to withstand the centrifugal stresses set up therein. Each diaphragm carries a packing 21 of suitable structure to :prevent lea sible between the diaphragm and the rotor. A. well known fornf of packing is shown rovided with the usual garter spring for holding it'yieldingly in position. will be noted between turbine wheels which are tied together by intermediate rings 19 pack against suchrings, while the others pack directly againstthe shaft. packing diameter is the mean between these two. The utilization of the intermediate rings 19 to tie the wheels'to'gether in pairs does not, therefore, greatly increase the the diameter "of the shaft.
In accordance patent statutes, ciple of operation of my invention, with theapparatus which I now-consider to with the provisions of the I'have described the, prinkage as far as pos-- It that the packing members 521 The average together represent the bestembodimentthereof; but
I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that nation of a shaft, wh ee1s said flanges, and an intermediate ring be-' tween some of the Wheels which engages the shaft and is formed integral With the adjacent holding rings.

wheels in said stages, said wheels having flanges which engage the shaft and holding rings sugrounding the. flanges, intermediate rings between some of said wheels which bers for the diaphragm engage the shaft and are connected to the adJacent holding rings,
g which pack against said intermediate rings and the-shaft.
