WATER TURBINE.
Application fnea'ruiy 29, 1922. serial No. 573,298.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, ARVID PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water Turbines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forma part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in water turbines whereby the standard pump m'ay be readily converted into a turbine. Y
A water turbine, for example, diifers from a centrifugal pump substantially only in the fact that in the former the water gives up energy to a wheel, while in the latter energy is supplied to the water by'a wheel.
The demand for small turbines is comparatively limited and as a result at present their cost is comparatively high, while on the other hand centrifugal pumps of small size, say up to 18-20 inches, are made up on a manufacturing basis in quantities and their cost is relatively reasonable.
Now the object of my invention is to so construct a waterturbine that relatively inexpensive centrifugal pump parts may be used for making up the water turbine.
Having now indicated in a general way the nature, purpose and advantage of my invention, I will proceed to describe a preferred embodimentthereof with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which F ig. l is a sectional view. in the plane of flow of Huid pressure of a water turbine constructed from centrifugal pump Vparts in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, of the subject of Fig. l at right angles.
3 is a partial section, similar to Fig. 2, showing the original pump parts in the casing. p
The parts shown in the drawings are those of a water turbine comprising a casing a, provided with a cover o, and through which passes a shaft c, carried in suitable bearings. The casing is provided with the usual inlet and discharge passages e and f, respectively.
Circular grooves g, g vare provided in the casing into which fit diffusing rings t, h to which. are attached guide vanes 2' which serve to concentrate and direct the motive fluid into the turbine wheel y', suitably mounted on shaft c.
.y hereunto set mjy The side plates of the turbine' wheel are fitted with wearing rings Z, Z which rotatey pbn the inside of the ends of diffusing rings In converting the standard pump, shown for comparison in Fig. 3, into a turbine, it is only necessary to remove the .standard stationary impeller wearing rings a', w from the circular grooves g, g, in which they ordinarily'tit, and insert the diffusing rings h, 7L., to which guide vanes z' are attached. The substitution of a turbine wheel jL for the standard pump impeller y completes the conversion, the parts of the standard pump remaining otherwise the same in the turbine.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 4 Y
l. As an article of manufacture, a casing adapted to support interchangeably a' s ta` provided with means adapted to enter said 1 recess.
4. As an article of manufacture, in combination, a casing provided with an annular recess adapted for cooperation with a stationary impeller ring and a diusin'g ring pro'- vided with a flange adapted to enter said recess whereby said ring is supported in cooperative relation to a turbine wheel.
5. As an article of manufacture, in combination, a casing provided with spaced annular grooves adapted to cooperate -with stationary .impeller rings and diffusing rings engaging in said grooves, said rings .supporting vanes which form nozzles adapted to direct fluid to a turbine wheel.`
In testimony of which invention, l have hand, at Trenton, on this uly, 1922. l
27th day of Anvin Pnrnnson.
