To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. SCHAAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Garment-Pockets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in safety attachments for garment pockets; and it consists in the novel features of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

Thepresent is an improvement on the safety attachment for garment pockets forming the subject-matter of my U. S. Patent No. 1,225,863, bearing date of May 15, 1917 5 and while having the same objects in view and possessing the same advantages as the patented structure, the present improvement possesses the additional advantage in that it can be worn without discomfort by obese persons whose flesh is apt to produce abnormal folds when sitting or stooping, in the region of the waist and groin in proximity to which the conventional trousers pocket is generally located. As its name indicates, the purpose of the attachment is to guard against the loss or unauthorized removal of articles from the pockets of garments, and especially from the pockets of trousers worn by men and boys, the contents of which are ever an easy prey for the pickpocket. The advantages of the improved construction will be fully apparent from the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l represents a portion of a pair of mens trousers in perspective, showing my invention applied to the side pocket thereof; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the attachment unfolded to conform to the open position of the pocket; Fig. 3 is an edge view of the attachment in its collapsed position and conforming to the closed position of the pocket; Fig. 4 is a combined face view and part transverse section on the zig-zag line 4--4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the attachment in its folded or collapsed position showing the manner in which the same is capable of yielding when in service; Fig. 6 is a plan of oneend of the blank from which the intermediate link is formed; Fig. 7 is an edge view of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a perspec- Specication of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings, T, represents a lportion of a pair of trousers, and P a conventional side pocket thereof as well understood in the art. The safety attachment herein comprises the terminal pairs of toggle-links l, l, the inner ends of the links terminating in reduced extensions 2 which are loosely received between slotted fork terminals 8, 3,'of the intermediate links 4, 4. The fork members 3, 8, are formed by first punching anoblong opening 0 in the blank or strip forming the link 4 (Figs. 6, 7,) after which the metal is folded inwardly on the line a: at about the center of the opening, the free end of the folded portion of the strip being then soldered to the main body of the strip beyond the inner terminal of the opening. The soldered (or otherwise fastened) terminal is formed with a shoulder or offset s whereby elongated slots it disposed in the general plane of the strip are formed between the folded and original portions of the metal,'said slots loosely receiving the cross pins 5 carried at the free ends of the reduced lextensions 2 of the links l. By this arrangement not only is there effected a. hinged connection between the members 1 and 4, but a sliding one as well, the longitudinal extent of the sliding movement being determined by the lengths of the slots z.. The pins 5 are flush with the side edges of the links 4. The hinge pin 6 at the meeting ends of the links 1, 1, has its ends projecting slightly beyond the side edges of the links for a purpose presently to appear. The several links connected as described form a collapsible jointed frame which may be opened out as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or folded to the position shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The links are in the form offlat preferably metallic strips though I do not wish to be restricted to any particular form of cross-section of link or to any specific material. The links 4 are secured to the opposite walls of the pocket by stitching tl passed through holes or perforations m and then covered by strips of cloth c if desired. Traversing the links 1, l, are slides 7 each slide being formed with an opening or slot w through which the toggle links are passed, and provided with terminal resilient arms or lobes 8, 8, which engage the edges of the links and frictionally maintain the slide on the links at any yposition to Whichit may be shifted.
