BURIAL-GASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1917. Serial No. 161,478.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB R. BURKHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sprngeld, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets, of which the following .is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burial caskets, particularly to that type of caskets in which provision is made for hermetically sealing the same but allowing the interior of the casket to be exposed to view when the outer lid or casing is removed by the employment of a glass plate forming a part of the seal.
The object of my invention is to improve the means for securing this glass plate in position by providing securing devices which are not only more economical than the old form of securing devices, but facilitate the installation of the glass and secure the same in position in a more efectivo way.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a casket showing my improvement applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of a portion of the same, the section being on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion of the same.
Fig. l is a perspective view of one of the securing devices.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modified form of securing device.
In the drawings, l represents the main body of a casket, which is in the present case formed of metal and 2 represents the top thereof of the usual construction. A shelf is provided for the inner sealing portion,
v shown in the present case as a single piece of metal 3, soldered or otherwise secured to the top edge of the main body portion 1 and bent to form a channel to receive a reinforcing metallic strip 4.
The inner casket top which forms the seal consists of a metallic portion 5 and a glass plate 6. The lower edge of the metallic portion is bent to form a channel to receive a reinforcing metallic strip 7 and is secured to the shelf 3 by screws 8; gaskets 10 of suitable material being placed between the parts to form an air tight joint.
The upper edge of the metallic top portion 5 is bent to form an inner channel to receive cement 1l, which has been a common construction, and provision is made for pressing the glass plate 6 up against this cement and holding it there, the cement being for the purpose of not only assisting in securing the plate in position but also to forman air tight joint.
My improvement consists in the peculiar means for pressing and holding the glass plate in position and consists of a series of clips l2, in connection with a series of keepers 13.` The keepers are each of right-angular form, one portion of which is preferably soldered to the under side ofpart 5 and the other portion of which projects downwardly in a vertical direction. Each clip is formed of a strip of slightly bowed iiat spring metal having its ends 12"i and 12b bent back but spaced away from the main body thereof, with the distance between the extreme ends substantially the same as the ,thickness of the keeper 13. Each keeper is provided with an aperture 14 through which the clips are inserted as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the portion l2EL giving or springing sufficiently to allow the clip to be projected through the aperture and afterward springing down to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 so as to retain the clip in position. To facilitate the insertion of the clip through the aperture the same is preferably crimped or closed up at the point indicated by 12. After the clip has been inserted in position it will be seen that one end thereof will bear against the metallic portion 5aL and the other end thereof against the glass plate 6 with a yielding pressure, forcing the glass plate against the cement l1 and retaining it there; the portions l2"l and 12b (3o-acting with the keeper below the aperture therein to prevent displacement of the clip.
In Fig. 5 there is shown a modification in which the clip is shown in the form of a slightly bowed flat strip of spring metal 15 having but one of its ends 15a bent back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:M
l. In a structure of the character described, a top provided with an opening, a glass plate for closing said opening, the edge of the top about the opening overlying said glass plate, a series of apertured keepers projecting downwardly from said top along the edge of said plate with the apertures beneath the same, and resilient devices arranged to be inserted through said apertures and bear against the under side of said plate. y
2. In a structure of the eharaeter deseribed, a top having an opening, a` glass plate for closing said opening, the edge of the top about said opening having a cement receiving channel on the underside thereof which overles said plate, a series of keepers projecting downwardly from said top with the apertures thereof beneath the plate, and a series of resilient devices insertible in said apertures and bearing against said plate to hold the saine against said channel.
3. ln a `structure of the character described, a top provided with an opening, a glass plate for closing said opening, the edge of the top about the opening overlying saic'l glass plate, a series of apertured rkeepers projecting downwardly from said topV with the apertures extended below said plate, and a series of flat springs insertible through said apertures and bearing against the under surface of said glass plate, said springs being so fornied as to prevent displacement thereof.
