\ CLIP FOR ATTACHING METALLIC LATE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 28,1912- Application filed January 81,1912. Serial 170. 674,622. i
i To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT E. \Vnrrn, a citize of the United States, residing in Youngstown, county of Mahoning, State-of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clips for Attaching Metallic Lath, of which the following is a specificauon g -l".y invention relates to metallic lath fastenings, commonly called clips and the object of it. is to provide a clip, which can be quickly applied without particular skill. In the illustrations. which are partof this specification like reference characters in the different drawings, refer tothe' same parts. Figure 1 is a View in perspective showing the clip-in place. illustrating the manner in which it is used to fasten lath to a flange 'of a beam. Fig. 2 is another view in perspective. illustrating the manner in which the clip is used. Fig. 3 shows the body portion of the clip, illustrating the way. in
which it is formed out of a piece of sheet metal. Fig. at shows a second part or key piece of the clip, this partalso being formed out of a piece of sheet metal.
From an inspection of the illustrations any person skilled in the sheet metal working art will understand how to make the improved clip. The body portion D, Fig. 3,
a strip of sheet metal of suitable thickness, say 16 gage, U. S. standard. The blank bent as shown to form the shoulder C which fits over the rib c of the lath (Fig. 1)
and an open slot, 5, is cutto provide-means forengaging the flange of a beam. As the shoulder C of the clip is adjusted on the rib of the lath, the arm E of the clip is passed under the flange of the beam. The key piece A is then directed between the flange and the arm E of the clip. A blow from a' hammer will then cause the key; piece to take the position as shown in Fig. 2.
-1 cf the key piece will as to produce the spring effect, in order that i the end portions 33, Fig. 4, will press against the flange as shown in Fig. 2. As 5 shown in Fig. 4 one end of the key piece is bent to form the turned edge 2. This is to facilitate the insertion of the key, the turned edge 2 providing a surface which can read' ily be struck with a hammer; When the 66 key piece is driven into position the cove fit over the e ge of the arm E of the body 4 and the side 6 of the slot will prevent any lateral movement of. the key piece and, as
already stated, the spring pressure atpoints 33 when the key piece'is in position, will produce a locking engagement; holdingthe lath rigid'and secure to the flange.
What I claim and desire to sec'ure by Leta5 ters Patent is I 'Afclip for attaching metallic lath to a support, consisting. of a strip of metal haring a portion transi ersely ent to form n shoulder on oneend ada ted to engage them rib of a lath, an open s ot in the body of the said strip forming an arm, and a key piece consisting of a strip of metal transversely bentto be sprung into position between. the said arm and a. supporting ele- 715 ment, thus bringing the parts in'loc king" engagement.- a Signed-in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 1
