Description

IAB; ROBBINS.
Check-Rein.
No. 126,746, i Patented May14,1872.
PATENT FFIGE.
vRICHARD B. RoBBINs, on ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN CHECK-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,746, dated May 14, 1872.
v of a top-plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
My invention has relation to elastic checkreins for harness; and consists in the novel construction of the spring device by means of `which the check-reih is connected to the saddle-hook, and. is made sufficiently elastic for the desired purpose, without dan ger of parting from extreme tension.
In the drawing, A represents a spiral spring inclosing two coupled links, a. a. At its outer end t-he link a is bent into a loop, b, through which the check-rein passes. The adj acent end of the spring encircles the neck of said loop, passing through an eye, b', formed at the end of the loop-wire. The outer end of the link a is attached to a leather loop, o, the ends of which are secured together by means of a rivet. The attachment of the link is made by bending it around the rivet-shank. The adjacent end of the spring is connected by bending it around the outside of the link-eye, as shown in Fig. 1. The strap o is hooked to the saddlehook by letting the latter pass through the loop, or through corresponding holes o. The links serve to strengthen and hold the spring in a proper position, and while allowing it to give, prevent it from being drawn out too far. I contemplate constructing these links of malleable iron.
Instead of the method herein described, of constructing the links so as to provide for the attachment of the spring, I have in view another which will serve to illustrate contemplated modication in my invention. This modification is is as follows: I construct each link with a broad shoulder, outside of which I wind the spring wire, diminishing the coil suiiiciently to cause it to hold. In this invention I do not wish to be confined to the use of a single pair of links, as I contemplate using
