JOHN M. CHAFFIN, OF REDCLOUD, NEBRASKA.
ELASTIC CONNECT'lON FOR CHECKREINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,388, dated August 19, 1902.
Application filed March 4, 1902. Serial No. 96,699. (No model.)
To Z7 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. CHAFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redcloud, in the county of Webster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to flexible connections for checkreins; and the object of the same is to construct a device of this character which will be simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
The novel construction employed by me is fully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my. device in its normal unstrained condition. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when strained.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a moderatelystift coiled spring, the length of which is about twice its diameter. Threaded through the coil-spring l are two straps 2 of a width about equal to the inner diameter of the coils of the spring 1, so as to fit tightly, but still be free to slide. The ends 3 of the strap are passed through rings 4 and united at 5 to form loops. Keepers 6 are secured around the straps to hold the rings at in place.
In operation the device is connected to a checkrein, and when the rein is strained it will assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The iongitudinal axis of the spring 1 will always stand at right angles to the direction of the pull on the rein. By this arrangement a stiffer device is obtained for the strength of the spring employed than in the ordinary checkrein device with a straight pull on the spring.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a checkrein device, the combination of a coiled spring, two loops engaging said spring, and means for attaching each of said loops to a checkrein, said means being arranged to exert a pull on the loops at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said spring, substantially as described.
2. In a checkrein device, the combination of a coiled spring, two loops engaging said spring, reins engaged by said loops and arranged so that the pull thereon will be at right angles to the axis of the spring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN M. OHAFFIN. Witnesses:
