UNITED STATES PATENT fROEEIoE.
FREDERICK JAMES SCI-IENK, OE MONTICELLO, ILLINOIS.
HARNESS.V s
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 692,716, dated February 4, 1902.
Application filed May 4, 1901." Serial No. 58 ,754. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JAMES SOHENK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to harness construction, and while my invention will be found desirable and applicable for use in operatively connecting various portions of the harness together yet I will for convenience in illustrating my invention as applied to use show the same as employed to form a bridle. The object of my invention is to provide securing devices which are especially designed for forming bridles or other parts of the harness out of woven fabric, as cords or small ropes, and while I shall conine my specification as above set forth it will be obvious that other uses than those specified may be made of my securing devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l illustrates my invention as applied to use` upon a bridle, showing the same in its operative condition. Fig. 2 illustrates the means which is employed in uniting two ends of straps together and extending them in dierent directions.
In order to conveniently designate the several parts of my invention and the coperat? ing accessories, numerals will be employed, of which 1 illustrates the bit of a bridle of the usual or any preferred construction, to whichIconnect theheadstallproper,2,formed, preferably, of a section of a rope by means of the tubular socket 3. The checkreins 7 may also be connected directly to the ring of the bit 1 by a similar socket 3, the checkreins preferably being disposed upward between the ears of the animal and connected togetherl by thedevice designated by the numeral 8. In order to prevent the rope from casually slipping when thus disposed in the tubular section 12, an anchoring-point 14 may be formed upon the interior wall of the device, preferably in the central part of the cut-away section or opening 13, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The anchoring-point will therefore take into a contiguous part of the rope orits equivalent, and thus insure against casual slipping of the device until the rope is grasped and drawn away from said point, when said device may be readjusted as desired.`
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a tubular socket 19 as being connected to the body portion or main section 20, the parts 20 corresponding to the parts 12 in Fig. 2 and the part l5 being replaced by said section 19. 'By this arrangementI am enabled to connect a branch of the rope, as indicated by the numeral 21, to the main section, the end of said branch be' ing entered in the tubular socket 19 and secured by the rivet 22.
The entire device illustrated in Fig. 2 is indicated in Fig. 1 by the numeral 26.
If desired, the upper portion of the headstall may consist of the section of strap, as indicated by the numeral 29, and the rope 30, passing over said strap, may be anchored or stayed in position bythe device indicated by the numeral 31.
' While I have described the preferred cony struction and combination of parts deemed necessary in Vmaterializing. my invention, I desire to comprehend in this application all Vsuch substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered to fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
`Believing that the construction and manner of using my improved anchoring devices have been made fully apparent from the foregoing specification considered in connection' with'the accompanying drawings, further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In harness construction, the herein-described attaching device comprising a tubular portion with cut-away portion intermediate its ends and a tubular socket rigid with the tubular portion, substantially as described.
2. In harness construction, the herein-described attaching device comprising a tubular portion with cut-away portion intermediate its ends and a tubular socket rigid with the tubular portion and parallel therewith and closed at one end substantially as described.

In harness construction, the herein-deportion of a rope disposed opposite said eutscribed attaching device comprising a tubuaway portion. 1o lar portion with cut-away portion interrne- In testimony whereof I aihx my signature diate its ends and a tubular socket rigid with in presence of two Witnesses.
