NECK YOKE. No. 320,524 Patented June 23, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo ALONZO B. ARNOLD, OF GLADBROOK, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO J. E. CAREY, OF SAME IJLAGE.
NECK-YOKE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,524, dated June 23, 1885.
Appication filed September 18, 1884.
To all wit/m, t may concern,
Be it known that I, ALoNZo B. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot' Gladbrook, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented an improved Neck- Yoke and Pole-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the peculiar'construction and combination of a pole-tip, a du- 1o pleX pintle, and adjustable clips with the pole of avehicle and a neck-yoke bar, as hereinafter fully set forth, in such a manner that the bar and straps or chains attached thereto can swing back and forth and up and down, and
vibrate horizont-.illy and also at right angles relative to the pole, as required to accommodate itself to the movements ofthe pole and the'horses, and to prevent the pulling and jerking of harness and animalsincidentto the 2o use ot'1ieck-yokes.
Figure l Ot' the accompanying drawings shows the pole-tip, the pintles, and clips, anda section of a bar combined. Fig. 2 is a tra-nsverse sectionV taken through the ,line x x ot' Fig. 1. Fig. R is a perspective view ofthe complete device on the end of a pole.
Jointly considered, these iigures clearly illustrate the construction, application, and operation of my complete invention.
A represents a metal p0le-tip,that may vary in size as desired. A leather lining is placed inside to prevent noise.
B B are pintles formed integral with a fiat and perforated center, C, adapted to be pivoted to the pole-tip.
D is a metal strap riveted or otherwise fixed to the front and top portion of the pole-tip.
F is a bolt that extends through the pole-ti p, the duplex pintle, and the strap D.
(No model.)
G G are clips that have eyes at their cen- 4o ters, adapted to admit the pintles B, and also adapted to be clasped around and fastened to a neck-yoke bar H, as clearly shown in Fig.
i 1. The bars H are usually turned on a lathe,
and have grooves to admit the olasping ends of the clips, and the space between such grooves ol'ten varies. By simply sliding the clips in or out on the pintles they can be readily adjusted to such varying spaces between the grooves of the neck-yoke bars.
I am aware that neck-yokes and pole-couplings have had the same number ot' joints, so that the parts could move relative to each other, the pole, and the horses in a similar manner; but my manner of constructing and connecting adjustable clips with a duplex pintle and a pole-tip, to adapt the complete device to be combined with yoke-bars having annular grooves to receive the clips, is novel and advantageous.
I claim as my inventionn The improved neck-yoke and pole-coupling composed of the pole-tip A, having a brace, D, the duplex pintle B B C, the boltF, and the open clips G, adapted to be fixed to yoke-bars havingrannular grooves and provided with eyes at their lower ends, to be thereby adjust .bly and detaohably connected with the pintles B, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
