Description
G. RUDlSCHHAUSER. RADIATQR AIR VALVE PROTECTOR.
APPLlCATlON FILED JAN. 2S. |918 Patented Maly 21,1918.
lill/IIIA Wl TNESSES GEORGE RUDISCI-II-IAUSER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
RADIATOR-AIR-VALVE PROTECTOR.
Application led January 26, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE RUDIsoH- HAUsER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, (borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Radiator Air Valve Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
M v invention relates to means for preventin'g unauthorized persons from manipulating' the air valve of a radiator and thereby interfering with the proper working of the heating system.
An object of the invention is tov provide a simple and inexpensive contrivance which can be easily applied to a radiator air valve.
Another object of the invention is to provide a contrivance of the class described which is applicable to a radiator air valve which has a top or bottom vent or both.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a radiator air valve having a top air vent and which is provided with a protector embodying my invention, the protector being shown in vertical section;
Fig. 2, an elevation of an air valve having a bottom and top vent provided with a protector, shown in vertical cross section, and which protector prevents access to either vent of the valve; and
Fig. 3, an elevation of the protector as it would appear if a section were taken on line 3 3, Fig. '2.
Referring to Fig. 1, 4 is a suitable tubular shell of a diameter sulliciently large to receive therein a radiator air valve 5. Preferably the diameter of the tubular shell is large enough to accommodate the widest part of the valve, but this is not necessary. It may be made large enough to engage the part of the valve directly below the vent 6, particularly in cases where the valve has only a top vent as shown in Fig. 1. The shell is suiiiciently long to present a material clearance above the vent 6. It has at l Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Serial No. 213,971.
the shell 4 has a transverse socket 9 eXtendn ing transversely of the shell near the upper part of same. The shell has openings registering with the socket, one opening 10 being of a diameter equal to that of the socket, while the other opening 11 is smaller so that the side of the shell presents a shoulder for the collar 12 of the set screw. The head 13 of the screw is preferably of angular cross section so that a special socket wrench is necessary for manipulating said screw within the socket. The screw has a thread ed opening in the radiator body 14 whereby the shell can be secured to the radiator. A suitable spacer 15 is provided between the shell and the radiator to maintain the shell in proper alinement with the radiator valve 5.
When the air valve 5 (see Fig. 2) has a top and bottom lvent 6 then, in additionto the shell 4, a cover shell 16 is provided which is similar to the shell 4 but slightly larger so that it may telescope over the shell 4 (see Fig. 3). Since the cover shell must clear the stem 17 of the air valve, it is provided with a longitudinal slot 18 which is open at the open end of the cover shell 16. In view of the fact that the stud securing the shells to the radiator body must be in vertical alinement with the stem 17, the slot 18 is deviated from the vertical to provide a body portion outside the opening for the set screw in the cover shell 16, thereby the set screw will lock the cover shell while it locks the shell 4 and thereby prevent the removal of either by an unauthorized person. It is self-evident that the cover shell has an opening 19 which registers with the opening 10 to give access to a socket wrench to manipulate the set screw.
From the above description it will be seen that a radiator air valve equipped with a protector as described will prevent any unauthorized person from manipulating the valve of the vent 6 and thereby interfere with the proper operation of the heating system. It will also prevent an unauthorized person from detaching the radiator air valve.
I claim:
1. In a protector for radiator air valves, a tubular shell having an open end adapted to admit the air valve so that the air vent of the air valve is located within the she1l,'a
socket disposed transverselyof=saidlshell,`
and a set screw having an annular head adapted to be located within the socket; said screw being adapted to secure the shell to a radiator `wher'ifthe-shell is engaging thera-A diator air valve, said shell having openings constituting Vents.
2; Iny a iprotector for lradiator Vair i valves,
setscrew lhaving an annular head adapted tobelocated within the socket, said screw being adapted to engage the itwo shells and secure fthe same to a radiator `when* said shells inclose-a radiator .air valve.
3. In. aprotectorfor radiator-.fairvalves,
a tubular shellhaving an open end adapted to admita radiator air valve,- asocket disposed vtransversely ofl said'Y shell,l .said shell having openings registering with said-socken one of said openings being of a smaller diameter than the socket to form an abutment fora setfscrewfgand aset screw having an annular head adapted to be located in said socket when securing the shell to the radiatorto protect the valve.
4211i" 'a' protector for radiator 'air 'valves7 a tubular shell hav-ing an open end adapted to admit a radiator air valve, a transverse socket in said shellysaidvshell` havingf1open-'- ings-in register with the socket, -one of said openings being ofa smallerdiameter than the socket, a cover shell adapted 'to telescope overy the first vand having a longitudinall slot to cleara portionof the air valve, said cover shell havingope-nin'gs adapted to register with the socket, anda set'screw having an annular head adapted to be disposed within the-socket and project through :the smaller opening of theirst'f mentioned -shell by means of said screw, said shells being adapted tobe securedA to= the` radiator about the f.
air valve.
