Description

F. F, VARLIE.
VALVE.
APPLIOATION IILED AUG. 2s, 1909.

mams "uns do., wAsmNarN, n. a.
FRANK F. VARLIE, OF MARIANNA, ARKANSAS.
VALVE.
To all whom fit may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK F. VARLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marianna, in the county of Lee and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves, the object being to provide a valve which is so constructed that the same can be used either for check or globe valve.
Another object of my invention is to provide a valve which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one in which the valve proper is slidably mounted in such a manner that the same can be locked in its seat, so as to form a globe valve or held in such a manner that a check valve will be formed. V
A still further object of my invention is to provide a valve with an indicatoi1 which will enable the operator to ascertain the position of the valve proper in order that the same can be used either as a check or globe valve.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve casing having an upwardly projecting portion, in which is adapted to be secured a plug in which the valve stem is mounted.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a vertical section through my improved valve showing the valve proper locked in its seat to form a globe valve. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the valve arranged in the seat in such a manner that the valve can be used as a check valve, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a valve-casing A which is provided with the usual inlet port B, and outlet port C, said ports being separated by a diaphragm D, having a central opening formed therein, the walls of which are beveled to form a conical valve seat, in which the valve proper is adapted to be mounted, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The casing A is provided with a central upwardly projecting neck portion A in which is mounted a plug E having an annu- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

lar flange E which is secured upon the upper edge of the neck A by a ring nut F which works on the threaded upper portion of the neck, and by this means I am enabled to fasten the plug within the neck in such a manner that it can be easily and quickly removed or placed in position, and at the same time a tight joint will be formed.
The plug E is provided with a central threaded portion Aor bore E2, in which is mounted the threaded portion G of a valve stem G, which extends out through a stuffing box I-I arranged in the upper end of the plug and is provided with a hand-wheel G2 for operating the same, so that the same can be readily moved up and down in the plug by turning the wheel.
The plug is provided with a chamber to each side of the threaded portion E2, and mounted in the lower chamber I is a neck portion J of a conical valve J which is adapted to be seated in the seat of the diaphragm, and is provided with feet J2, as clearly shown. The lower end of the valve stem G is provided with a head G3 which iit-s snugly within the neck J of the valve J, so that the same can move freely therein, and for preventing the head from being drawn out of the neck J I provide the same with internal threads, in which is mounted a screw plug K having a central bore to receive the valve stem. It will be seen that when the head G3 of the valve stem is screwed down into the position shown in Fig. l, the valve will be securely locked in its seat, and by raising the valve stem into the position shown in Fig. 2, the valve will be allowed a vertical movement, so that the same can be used as a check valve.
For indicating the position of the valve stem, so as to ascertain whether the valve is locked or allowed a free movement, I provide the valve stem adjacent the wheel G2 with an annular groove G4 which is adapted to register with a pointer L carried by the plug E, said pointer being preferably formed of spring metal, and being adapted to fit within the groove of the stem, when brought into alinement therewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A valve of the kind described comprising a valve casing having a diaphragm provided with a valve seat, an upwardly projecting neck portion, a plug arranged within said neck portion having an annular flange resting upon the upper edge of the same, a ring nut for locking said flange thereon, said plug being provided With a threaded bore and a chamber at its lower end, a valve seated in said seat provided With a neck extending into and fitting snugly Within said chamber and a valve stem rovided With a threaded portion mounted 1n the threaded bore of said plug, said valve stem being provided With a head slidably mounted Within the neck of the valve.
2. A valve of the kind described comprising a valve casing provided with oppositcly disposed inlet and outlet ports, and a centrally projecting neck portion, a diaphragm formed in said casing provided with a conical valve-seat, a lug mounted Within said neck portion having an annular flange litting upon the edge of the neck portion, a ring nut for securing said flange in position, said plug being provided vwith a threaded bore and a chamber at its lower end, a conical valve mounted Within said seat provided with a neck extending into said chamber, a valve stem mounted in the bore of the plug provided With a head extending into the neck of the valve, a plug for securing said head therein, said stem being provided with an annular groove, and a pointer carried by said plug adapted to t Within said groove for determining the position of said valve.
