To all whom 'it may concern:
v Be it known that I, ALLEN A. BowsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the .county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Caps for F ill-Pipes and the Li e, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to caps for the fillpi es of gasolene or oil tanks, and in fact,
l -pipes where it is desirable to close the inlet to a tank or chamber, and the invention has for its object to provide an improved and simple form of ca 'for a fill-pipe which will etfectually close t e pipe against the admis- 'sion of rain or dirt, and at the same time Will l provide for the free discharge of any excess of gas, as well as for the inlet of air necessary .-to take the place of the liquid being extracted,
the device being also proof against being removed by unauthorized persons.
With a view to the attainment of these ends, and the accomplishment of certain other objects which will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features ofnovelty which will now be described with refer ence to the accompanying drawing, showing an exemplific'ation of the invention, and will then be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawing-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view on the line 1, 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan section on the line 2, 2, of
.Fig 1.
1 is the top ofthe tank or chamber having the fill-pipe to be closed, which is shown in this example as being a threaded pipe or nipple 2. Upon this pipe or nipple is screwed the cap whose body portion is indicated at 3, and which when screwed into place completely closes the pipe 2, with the exception of a vent 4 in which is fitted a valve housing 5, carrying orbeing provided with any suitable means of permit-ting the excess of gas to blow off and the ready -entrance of air to take the place of the liquid withdrawn. Such a means may consist of two ball-valves 6, 7, the former of which closes a valve or vent passage 8, and is held against its seat by a spring 9, secured in place by any suitable bushing 10. Extending outwardl from the housing 5 is a neck 11 1n which t e seat for for the valve 7 is formed, the latter being held in lace in any appropriate way, as by vmeans o a perforated cap 12. The cap thus formed is provided with means for locking it in place, consisting preferably of a hasp 13, hinged at 14 to the body 3, and having on the opposite side a downwardly projecting arm l5, which when the hasp is down in place engages with a boss 16 formed on the side of the till-pipe 2, and consequently revents the cap body from being remove( by unscrewing. This hasp 3 is provided also with an aperture 17 through which protrudes a staple 20, attached to the body 3 in any suitable way, as by means of a' screw-threaded stem 21, the aperture 17 being narrow like the' width of the staple 20, so that when the hasp is in place over the staple, the staple cannot be unscrewed, the eye of the sta le projecting sufficiently for the passage o a pad-lock, or other suitable locking means. The hasp 13 also serves as a cover for the vent 4, which, as indicated in Fig. 1, is formed with a surrounding flange 22, to prevent any water, which may leak in under the hasp, from running through the vent 4, and the under side of the hasp is formed with a recess 23 to receive this Hange.
I claim:
1. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a fill-pipe, a cap body, said fill-pipe and cap body being provlded with ooperative means for attachment of the body to the pipe by a relative rotary movement, means for holding the parts against said relative rotary movement, em
bodyinv two disengageable members, one carriedy the cap body and the other having a iixed relation to the fill-pipe, and means for holding said members from being disengaged.
2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a fill-pipe, a cap body, said cap body and fill-pipe being provided with means for attaching them together requirin a relative rotary movement, a hasp carrie by the body, means fixed with relation to the fill-pipe for the engagement of the hasp, for holding the body against rotary Q movement, and means for locking the hasp and body against relative movement.
3. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a fill-pipe, a cap body for closing the same, said cap body and fill-pipe having means for attaching them together, requiring a relative rotary movement, a hasp hinged to the body and having a projection, means txed with relation to the fillpipe for the enga ement of said projection, and means for loc ing the hasp against pivotal movement on its hinge. i
4. .In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a `fill-pipe, a cap body, said body and pipe having means of attachment requirin a relative rotary movement,
a hasp carried y the body, means fixed with relation to the fill-pipe for the engagement of the hasp for holding the body against said relative rotary movement, and a staple for a lock screwed into the body and held from unscrewing by the hasp.'
5. In a device for the purpose described, the combination oi a fill-pipe, a cap body, means for attaching the body and pipe together, requiring a relative rotary movement, a slotted hasp carried by the body, means iixed with relation to the pipe, and engaging with a part of the hasp, for holding the body against said relative rotary movement, and a staple screwed into the body and projecting through the slot of the hasp, for receiving a lock.
6. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a fill-pipe, a cap body thereon having a single vent opening, a valve housing communicating with said vent, two valves in said housing, opening in opposite directions with res ect to internal pres'- sure in the fill-pipe, an means for yieldingly valves to its seat.
7. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a dll-pipe, alcap, body removably attached thereto, and provided with a vent, and locking means for holding the cap body a ainst removal, embodying a membercarrie by the cap body, and covering said vent.
8. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a fill-pipe, a cap body removably secured thereto and provided with a vent, said Vent having a surrounding flange on the exterior of the body, and means Jfor locking the cap body against removal, embodying a member secured to the body and having a recess in its under side fitting over said ange.
