Description

W. J. CLARKE.
SAFETY FAUOET.
APPLIOATION rum JUNEB, 1911 To all whom it may concern.
mean srnras WALTER J. QEIAEKE, Oh" SAN FRisN-GISGO, CALHOIENIA.
SAFETY-FAUCET.
Be it known that I, WALTER J. GLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented newand useful Improvements in Safety-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
. readily applied to tanks and cans for containing gasolene and the like, which faucet will not open in case the can is upset and from which. faucet all packing glands are eliminated.
The invention consists of the parts and r the combination and construction of parts. as hereinafter more fully described and claimed having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal seot-ion'of the faucet showing its application to a container. Fig. 2 is a section of the faucet body. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail of the springs. Fig. 5 is an end view of the entire device. Fig. 6 is asection of the flange. Fig. 7 is an end view of the same. Fig. 8 represents details of the sealing lid. Fig. 9 represents details of the valve. 10 represents details of the operating key.
Fig. 11 is a detail of the conical plug.
tainer, which may tank or can, or other conbe either of the horizontal or of the vertical type as here shown.
A represents a 2 is a flange which isbolted, or otherwise suitably secured to the can and on to whichflange the body 3 of the faucet is adapted to be screwed.
4; is a spout. I
5 is the valve seat for the valve 6, and 7 1s a chamber in the outer end of the faucet body'forming ahousing for the key 8, the plug!) and springlt). Valve 6 has a stem 11 sliding in the spider-guides 12 in flange 52.
13 is a spring cperative to keep the valve 6 normally closed against its seat Valve 6 has a hollow or tubular stem portion projecting into the spout passage, and in axial line with a reduced bore 15 of the faucet body. Into this hollow or tubular portion 14, the inner end of the key 8 tits and v Specification of 'ictt'ers Yatent. Application filed June 8, 1911. serial li'o. 632,018.

is guided. flhe key 8 has an expanded cylindrical portion 16 between its ends normally fitting and closing the passage 15 in the body 3.
17 is a. chamber 1 may be sealed, as indicated at 18, and the key protected against being tam-v pered with. I
in operation the cover 17 is unlocked and .lifted and the key 8 pushed in until it strikes the bottom of the cavity in the tubular projection 14: to open the valve 6 whereupon the liquid can flow out of the spout.- At the same time that the key is pushed in the coni- ,cal plug 9, which has a snug s liding fit on the key stem is carriedforward intoits conical seat at the reduced end of the chamber 7,
so as to prevent the liquid spurting out into chamber 7 around the key; spring mallowmg for a limited movement of the key in wardly to open the valve after the plug 9 is fully seated. On the release of pressure on the key 8 the combined action of the spring 13 and the liquid pressure in the tank closes valve 6 snug on its seat 5, and the spring 10 retracts the key so that it is normally out of operative engagement with the valve. Whenhinged s ealing cap by which the ever the cover 17 is closed down over the key and locked-the tank can be turned up side down, or rolledover without any liability of the valve being openef. or unseated. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isv 1. In a faucet the combination of a cylindrical body, one end shaped to form a housingfor a key, the other endshaped to pro- ,yide a valve seat. a spout between the ends, a valve fitting said seat androntrolling discharge to said spout,-a key in said housing operative on the valve, and aplug and a seat therefor, said pl ug being loosely mounted on the key and adapted to prevent the liquid from entering operated to open the valve.
2. The combination with a can, of a flange said housing when the key is faucet body having a separate for the plug and independent springs one upon the valve {1nd the other upon the plug and both yieldable in the same direction 5 whereby the plug" is seated when the valve is Witnesses:
