To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. KENT, citizen of the United States, residing at High Springs, in the county of Alachua and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Plugs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plugs for steam boilers and particularly to means for positively preventing the plugs from being blown out by the pressure of the steam in the boiler.
One object of the invention is to provide a plug having simple and inexpensive means whereby the same is stayed or securely fastened after being screwed into place, thus positively preventing the plug from belng blown out by the pressure of steam in the boiler or dislodged in other ways as by vibration.
Another object is to make provision whereby said fastening means may be released and disengaged from the plug and the latter removed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of the crown sheet of a boiler showing the application of my improved fastening device for permanently holding a plug in position in said sheet. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to and on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view before the fastening bolt has been cut off and headed or riveted against the outer end of the plug; Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the plug shown in the preceding figures;

In the embodiment of the invention as shown in the first six figures of the drawmgs wherein is illustrated a plug designed to be permanently engaged with and se cured in a boiler to close an opening prevlously occupied by the arch pipe or other object, 1 denotes the plug having a cylindrical exteriorly threaded body 2 the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the threaded hole or opening to be closed by the plug. On the outer end of the threaded body of the plug is formed ,a reduced squared extension or head 3 adapted to receive a wrench whereby the plug is firmly screwed into the opening. The body 2 and head 3 of the plug have formed therein a centrally disposed bore or passage 4: with which is adapted to be engaged a plug fastening bolt 5.
The bolt 5 has its inner end projecting be yond the inner end of the plug and swivelly engaged with an aperture 6 in a bracing yoke 7 arranged across the inner end of the plug and having its ends engaged with the inner side of the crown sheet or other part of the boiler to which the plug is applied. The inner end of the bolt is provided with a tapered head 8 which has a counter-sunk engagement with the aperture 6 in the yoke 7 whereby the inner end of the bolt is firmly anchored. The outer end of the bolt is squared as at 9 to receive a wrench whereby the bolt may be turned in its threaded engagement with the plug to draw the yoke 7 into tight engagement with the inner side of the crown sheet or other part of the boiler thereby securely fasten ing the plug by straining its threaded engagement with the boiler. After the bolt has been turned to tighten the yoke 7 and the plug the outer end of the bolt may be cut off adjacent to the outer end of the extension 3 of the plug and the end of the bolt headed or riveted against the head 3 as shown at 10 whereby the bolt is locked and a fluid tight joint formed between the bolt and the plug. After the parts have thus been adjusted and the bolt headed in the manner described it will be seen that the plug will be positively and permanently secured in position and cannot be possibly blown out by the pressure of the steam in the boiler. By providing the yoke 7 in which the end of the bolt is anchored it will be seen that the water in the boiler will have free access to the end of the plug.
In the last four figures of the drawing is shown a slightly modified form of the in vention wherein the fastening mechanism is detachably applied to a blow off or other form of plug which is designed to be removed from the boiler when desired. In the last form of the invention the plug 11 is shown as having an exteriorly threaded body and a head at its outer end to receive a wrench and provided with a centrally disposed threaded bore or passage 12 which communicates with a threaded socket 13 formed in the outer end of the plug and of considerable greater diameter than the bore 12. The fastening bolt 14 for this form of the plug is headed at its inner end at 16 and swivelly engaged with a bracing yoke 15 corresponding to and constructed in the same manner as the yoke 7 in the first form of the invention and which has its ends engaged with the inner side of the portion of the boiler to which the plug is applied. The outer end of the bolt is reduced and squared as at 17 and is also preferably provided with a screw driver slot 18. lVhen the bolt is engaged with the plug the outersquared end projects into the socket 13 in the outer end of the plug in position to re ceive a wrench or screw driver whereby the bolt may be turned in its threaded engagement with the plug to draw the yoke 15 into tight engagement with the inner side of the boiler and thereby securely fasten the plug, thus positively preventing the same from being dislodged or blown out by the pressure of steam in the boiler. In order to reduce the possibility of the steam escaping between the bolt and its threaded engagement with the plug, I preferably seal the socket 13 with aclosure consisting of a supplemental plug 19 screwed into the threaded socket 13, said supplemental plug having its inner end cupped at 20 to loosely receive the squared outer end of the bolt as shown.
In order to remove the plug 11 it is simply necessary to first remove the supplemental plug 19 after which a wrench or screw driver may be applied to the squared outer end of the bolt and the latter unscrewed from the plug 11 thereby releasing and permitting the same to be unscrewed from the threaded opening in the boiler in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing's, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advan tages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A tubular plug adapted to be inserted into a hole in a boiler, the plug having a head at its outer end and a threaded bore; combined with a yoke adapted to span such hole and having a perforation, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and its inner end swivelly mounted in said perforation, and means for turning the bolt from its outer end. i
2. A tubular plug adapted to be inserted in a hole in a boiler, and having a threaded bore; combined with a yoke adapted to span the hole in the boiler, and a bolt having a threaded body screwed into said bore and swiveled through said yoke, its head being at the inner side of the latter and its outer end being squared.
3. A tubular plug having external threads adapted to be screwed into a hole in a boiler, an angular head at its outer end, and a threaded bore; combined with a yoke adapted to span said hole and having a perforation through its center, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and a headed inner end swivelly mounted in said perforation in the yoke, and means for turning the bolt from its outer end.
4. A tubular plug having external threads adapted to be screwed into a hole in a boiler, an angular head at its outer end, and a threaded bore; combined with a yoke adapted to span the hole in the boiler, and a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore, a headed inner end swiveled through said yoke, and a squared outer end.
5. A tubular plug adapted to be inserted into a hole in a boiler and having a threaded bore enlarged at its outer end into a socket; combined with a yoke adapted to span such hole and having a perforation, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and a headed inner end swivelly mounted in said perforation, its outer end being squared and standing within said socket, and means for sealing the latter.
6. A tubular plug adapted to be inserted into a hole in a boiler and having a threaded bore enlarged at its outer end into a threaded socket; combined with a yoke adapted to span such hole and having a perforation, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and a headed inner end swivelly mounted insaid perforation, its outer end standing within said socket and being rovided with means whereby the bolt may e turned, and a cup-shaped plug screwed into said socket and inclosing the outer end of the bolt.
7 A tubular plug adapted to be inserted into a hole in a boiler and having a threaded bore enlarged at its outer end into a threaded socket; combined with a yoke adapted to span such hole and having a perforation, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and a headed inner end swivelly mounted in said perforation, its outer end being squared and standing within said socket, and a cup-shaped plug screwed into the socket and inclosing said squared end.
8. A tubular plug having external threads adapted to be screwed into a hole in a boiler, an angular head at its outer end, and a threaded bore enlarged at its outer end into a threaded socket; combined with a yoke adapted to span said hole and having a perforation, a bolt having a threaded body engaging said bore and a headed inner end swiveled in said perforation, its outer end standing within said socket and being squared and provided in its extremity with a screw-driver slot, and a plug screwed into and sealing the socket beyond said extrernlty.
