To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burke, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Hair and Hat Pins, of which the following is a specifica-v tion.

The present invention relates to a. pin capable of being worn in either the hair or hat of the wearer and primarily directed to a novel construction of means for preventing the loss of the pin.

The primary object of the present invention resides in the production of a device of the above stated character, wherein is loosely mounted in the hollow body portion of the pin a locking member capable of being projected exteriorly of the said body for effectively accomplishing the looking action of the pin in engagement with the wearers hair, consequently, assuring against any accidental loss or displacement of the pin therefrom.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a pin of the above stated character which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in use and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the illustrative embodiment of the invention, use is made of a hollow pin body 5 preferably constructed of metal, or the like material. The pin gradually tapers in a direction from the open end 6 thereof to provide the pin with the usual tapering pointed end 7, while the material forming the pin is stamped out at points in the length of the pin to provide the same with a plurality of unequally spaced openings 8, 8 and 8 each pair of openings 8, 8 and 8 being longitudinally alined with one another and opening out through the opposite sides of the pin body, disposing the openings 8 at a point adjacent the lower end of the pin, positioning the pair of notches 8 at a point adjacent the upper end of the pin, while arranging the pair of openings 8 at a point substantially intermediate the former mentioned pairs of openings.

Loosely mounted within the hollow body portion 5 is a resilient locking member 9 constructed of a plurality of strands of material 10, 11 and 12. The strand of material 12 exceeds the length of either the strands l0 and 11, while the strand l1 exceeds the length of the strand 10, consequently upon the inter-twisting of the shanks 12 of each of said strands, the pronged ends 13 of the strand 10 are disposed at a point adjacent the head 14: of the locking member; while the pronged ends 15 of the strand 12 are arranged at the outer end of the locking member, and the pronged end' 16 of the strand 11 is disposed intermediate the prongs 13 and 15 of the respective strands 10 and 12. When the locking member is moved in a direction toward the pointed end 7 of the body, the prongs 13, 15 and 16 will be respectively projected through the openings 8, 8 and 8 of the body.

Upon the ejection of the prong members of the locking member through the openings of the pin body, the pin will be fastened in the hair of the wearer. Manifestly, upon desiring to release the pin from either the hat or hair of the wearer, a pull is given to the locking member for moving the same outwardly of the pin body, which in turn will retract the resilient prongs of the strands within the pin body sufliciently to prevent the entanglement of the locking member with the locks of the hair.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is A pin of the character set forth comprising a hollow body portion having a plurality of spaced pairs of transversely alined openings and a locking member for said pin body, said locking member being construct- 5 ed of a plurality of intertwisted strands of material of diflerent lengths, the extremities of each strand presenting resilient prong members so positioned with respect to the locking member as to facilitate their ejection through the respective openings of 10 the pin body upon movement of the locking member in. one direction.
