Specification of'Letters Patent.
Applicationfiledfictober. 14, 1916, SerialNo; 125 625. Renewed March 2a, 1918 Serial no. 224,392.
ToaZZ whom-.27? mayrcancera: Be it known: that I, BENJAMEEN Kovaos, a subject/of the King-of Hungary, residing at New York Lin-the county of New York-and; State of:v l .ew York,.have invented" new and useful Improvements in Safety Door-Locks, of which'the. following is a; specification.
This: invention relates to improvements in. safety locks,2 and.-has. as its principal object provisions for preventing outsiders from picking,,unfastening or opening the. lock. The object can be subdivided" intominor objects, one of which is the necessity of using two=keys-fon opening-the. lock..
Another object. is the. method of turning theseukeys, and to provide means within the look so that one of the keys can bechanged, sh'oulmilit be necessary. I I
A still further obj set; is. to provide a means within the lock' for preventing the unlocking of the lock, should one of the keys not beetheproper key. 7 I
A further object are means for putting.
on auxiliary covers on fastening screws, to prevent tampering.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 shows a view of the outside cover of the lock.
Fig. 2 shows the end view of the section of the lock through 1-1.
Fig. 3 shows the view of the inside face of the lock.
Fig. 4c shows a perspective view of the means for receiving the bolt of the lock.
Fig. 5 shows a reverse View of the same means.
Fig. 6 shows one of the tumblers within the lock.
Fig. 7 shows the tripping means.
Fig. 8 shows an assembled view of the inside of the lock, with the bolt out.
Fig. 9 shows a section through 99 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 shows the inside View of the lock with the bolt in.
Fig. 11 shows the protective cover of the guarded key slot.
Fig. 12 shows the protective cover about to be displaced, and
Fig. 13 shows a detail perspective view of the safety attachment on the bolt.
rat-en ted May 7, 19 1s.
In. Fig- 8, is shown the saf'ety locking-at 1' tachment which is the main: featurez'ofthis invention. lVithin the casingm15 of the lock 1'7 and engages in notcheslS' and;19 oflsaid bolt 16 and? at the same time releaSesatumway in, therefore, keeping; the door still locked.
Another turn of the key will cause projection 22 of the tumbler-mechanismto enten slots 24. This willdrawithecbolt offthe. look. all the way in, allowingthedoor to: be,
opened. V a
When the key; which operates theyboltsl6- is turned, the bolt 16 will be drawn in, at the sametime, anian-gular; projection 25 which is. also attached, as shown, to the bolt is, drawn inwardly. Projection 26 of the said angle piece 25 must be free to slide within the cavity 28, formed by the alinement of a series of grooves in the tumblers 27 otherwise the bolt 16 will be prevented from being drawn within the casing 15.
Therefore to draw in bolt 16, it is necessary to aline the openings 28 of the tumblers 27 so that projection 26 will be free to slide therein. To accomplish this, the four tumblers 27 having slots 28 normally not in the same line, must be lined up in such a manner that the slots 28 of the tumblers are in one line and held that way to allow projection 26 of the bolt 16 to enter freely therein.
These four tumblers are operated from the outside by a key entering through slot 29. This key is so designed as to conform with the shape of the four adjacent tumblers so that when said key is turned, the tumblers will rise and allow the projection 26 to enter the slot 28, so that the bolt 16 may be with drawn by the turning of the key entered through the key slot 17. These tumblers are pivoted on the pin 30.
In order to operate the lock from within, it is merely necessary to use the key through the slot 17, the tumblers being raised from this side by means of a lever 31, provided with a pin 32, which, extending through slot 33, is adapted to engage the underside of the lee locked.
projections 34 formed on tumblers 27 in such manner as to aline the tumblers to allow the projection 26 to easily enter grooves 28.
On the outside of the look I prefer to conceal the key slot 29 by means of a plate which is pivoted at one end to the casing, for swinging movement, so as to clear the lrey slot 29 when access is desired thereto, the opposite end of said plate being designed to be latched in any suitable manner to the easing when the plate is swung into position to conceal the key slot.
ln Fig. 11, the plate 35 is shown, covering the key slot 29. it is a normal position and in Figs, 12 and 1, it is shown open by merely pressing button 36 and turning the plate 35 away from the key slot 29 and thereby uncovering the same.
Figs. d and 5 show the keeper of the lock with an auxiliary cover l0, which covers up thescrews to prevent outsiders from tampering with the screws of the lock. d6 is the screw plate for fastening to the door, 4:7 is the opening for allowing the bolt toenter the casing 45 when the door is locked.
In Fig. 1, the plate 87 is an auxiliary plate and which is really held on to the main body of the look by means of screws 38 and screws 39 which are merely decoys. An attempt could not be made to break open the loci: by
@opies of this patent be obtained for five actuated tumbler pivoted to the casing and engageable with the top side notches, means for actuating said tumblerco-incidently with the sliding of said bolt when the bolt key is manipulated, an odsetright-angled ele ment combined with said bolt and a plurality of semi-disk-like tumblers pivoted in such manner as to engage with said bolt and said fight-angled element to positively prevent the unlockin movement of the bolt T when in locked position, said semi-dislr-like tumblers having alined grooves for the suitable reception of the said right-angled member when the bolt is in unlocked position, the
said semi-disk-like tumblers being operable by a separate key from the outside of the casing.
in testimony whereof, I have signed myname to this specification.
