OOMBINED DOOR KNOB AND LOCK.

315 utlo'zncl UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
ERNEST WHITTINGHAM, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED DOOR KNOB AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersrPatent No. 365,891, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed May 14, 1857. Serial No. 238,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEsr WI-IITTINGHAM, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Knob and Look; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined door knob and lock; and the invention consists in providing the rose on the outside of the door with an outwardly-projecting stud arranged to engage in a segmental slot of the door-knob, while said knob is provided with a movable shutter or tumbler located within the same and operated by a suitable key,by means of which said sh utter may be withdrawn or projected to interfere or not, as desired, with the stud, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure l is an edge view of a door to which my improved door knob and lock are applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the locking-knob,showing the shutter in its locking position. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the shutter unlocked, and Fig. 4 is a plan.
A is a door-lock of any desired description, such as are used and operated in connection with door-knobs.
B is the rose on the outside of the door. It is of ordinary construction, except that it is provided with an outwardly-projecting stud,G.
. D isa door-knob of ordinary description and operation, except that it is made hollow and forms the case of a lock inclosed therein.
This lock may be of any suitable description, and is operated by a key through a keyhole in the outer face of the doorknob. In-
stead of the ordinary boulder-latch,this key is made to operate a movable sh utter,E,secured within the door-knob in the rear ofa segmental slot, F, cut through the rear face of the doorknob.
In practice, the parts being constructed and arranged as described, the stud O on the rose engages in the segmental slot F, which latter is of sufficient length to permit the doorknob to turn freely the full amount required to operate the door-latch. Should it be required, however, to lock the door from the outside, the key in the knob is turned to project the shutter across the slot F, as shown in Fig. 2, when the stud O prevents the knob from being turned.
It is clear that a device of this kind may be applied to any kind of door-lock.
To permit the opening of the door from the inside, the latch of the door must be provided with a thumb-piece, G, while the inner doorknob may be dispensed with.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, wit-h a lock and the knob, of a ro'seprovided with aprojection extending into said knob, and'a locking device for said stud carried by said knob, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a door-knob having in its rear face a segmental slot, a movable shutter or tumbler secured within said knob and operated by a key inserted in said knob, of a stud projecting into said slot, whereby when the shutter is brought in contact with said stud the knob is prevented from being turned, substantially as set forth.
ERNEST WHITTINGHAM.
