RACE-KNIFE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OZBERT -M. fioor'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of" Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Race-Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in race knives, and the object of this improvement is to provide a race knife having a detachable cutting or marking blade that may be easily removed from the blade shank after it has become worn.

A further object is to provide a race knife blade of compact form that may be placed in an ordinary multiple blade jack knife and that will lie Within the knife handle and not be in the way when the knife is closed.

A still further object is to provide strong and simple means of attaching the marking blade to the blade shank.

The invention consists in the provision of a detachable marking blade for a race knife and in the provision of novel means for securing such marking blade to a blade shank, as will be more clearly hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a jack knife embodying this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down on the top of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the knife with the race blade closed; Fig. 4: is a detached view in perspective of the marking or cutting blade; and Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the end of the blade shank as it appears when the marking blade is removed therefrom.

Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 6 indicates a knife handle which may be the handle of an ordinary jack knife, and may embody all of the features of any ordinary jack knife, except that one of the usual blades is replaced by a race knife blade constructed in accordance with this invention.

The race knife blade in its preferred form consists of a blade shank 7 recessed near its outer end to provide a shoulder 8 and having a curved tip 9 that coacts with the shoulder 8 to hold the marking blade.

The marking blade consists of a flat portion 10 rounded as at 11 to fit the shoulder 8 and having a U-shaped cutting or marking element 12 that projects outwardly from the fiat portion 10 and is sharpened, as indicated at 13 so that it may be used for cutting or marking wood or metal.

The marking blade is secured to the blade shank by a single screw 14: disposed near the inner end of the fiat portion 10 in such a position that it will coact with the shoulder 8 and curved shank tip 9 and rigidly secure the marking blade to the shank.

When a race knife is used a great deal the continued use and continued sharpening of the blade rapidly wear it away and the knife soon becomes useless, but when one of the marking blades in the knife herein shown and described is worn down it may quickly and easily be replaced by a new blade.

Another advantage of this knife resides in the fact that the marking element 12 may be comparatively short when the knife is new thus permitting the race blade to close compactly and be out of the way.

When the knife is in use, the strain on the marking blade will act directly against the shoulder 8 and curved tip 9 of the blade shank, and there will be very little strain on the screw 14. For the above reason there is practically no danger of the marking blade becoming loose in the blade shank.

If desired a rivet or other form of pin may be used in place of the screw 14:, or the blade shank 7 may be made a part of an ordinary straight knife, instead of being placed in a folding jack knife.

It is obvious that changes in the precise form of construction of the devices herein disclosed may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A race knife comprising a blade shank provided with a curved tip and a blade having a curved marking element and adapted to be removably secured within said tip.

2. A. race knife comprising a'blade shank that is provided with a curved tip and is recessed to form a shoulder, a blade having a curved marking element and adapted to fit the end of said blade shank and means for securing said blade to said shank.

3. The combination with a race blade having a blade shank that is provided with a curved tip and is recessed to form a shoulder, of a separable marking blade adapted to fit within said curved tip and rest against said shoulder and a pin to eo-act with said curved tip, and said shoulder to secure said marking blade to said blade shank.

4. The combination Witlia race knife having a blade shank that is providedwith a curved tip and is recessed at its outer end to form a shoulder, of a marking blade having a flattened portion adapted to fit Within the recess in said blade shank and en;- gage With said shoulder, a marking element 10 on said flattened portion and adapted to fit within the curved tip of said blade shank and means coaoting with said shoulder and said curved tip for securing said marking blade to said blade shank.
