POCKET-KNIFE.
Application filed .Tuly 23, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL UNO CARLSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pocket knives and more particularly to a knife comprising a handle carrying a blade adapted to telescope thereinto. Novel and positive locking means for the blade in its extended and in its telescoped position are provided.
Another object is the provision of novel means whereby a portion of the blade may be used as a file and as a cigar-cutter.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the knife with the blade in extended position. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of Fig. 2 with the blade telescoped. Fig. 4 is a view of the knife closed. Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on line 6--6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a similar view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved knife comprises a hollow handle formed with metallic ends 1, 2 and with a wood body portion 3 which is cut out and formed with interior opposite longitudinal grooves et, 4 which serve as guides for the ends of a transverse pin 5 Iixedly disposed in the closed end of a blade casing 6 which terminally carries the blade 7 upon a pivot 8 and which casing is provided with a stop pin 9 to limit the movement of said blade upon its pivot. The blade may be moved upon its pivot away from the stop pin through an are of 180 degrees, from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or until it is disposed within the casing. The sides of the casing may be corrugated Speoication of Letters Patent.

as at 10 to form a file and may be apertured as at 11 to receive the end of a cigar which may be cut by the blade 7 as the same is moved from open to closed position. A transverse pin 12 extending through the end 1 of the knife handle serves to prevent complete withdrawal therefrom of the blade casing.
To the closed end of the blade casing a head 13 is secured which is disposed within the knife handle and is formed with integral lateral ears 14, 14. Through the end 2 of the handle the shank of a thumb screw 15 extends and terminally carries a cam release 16 disposed within the knife handle and .in frictional engagement with a spring socket 17 which is adapted for releasable locking engagement with the integral ears 14 of the head 13 when the blade casing is telescoped into the handle as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This arrangement forms a positive lock for the blade casing in this position. To disengage the socket from the head the thumb screw is turned until the projections 18 of the cam release are brought into engagement with the spring socket to force the same away from the head and permit withdrawal of the same.
What is claimed is:-
1. In a knife comprising a hollow handle formed with oppositely disposed interior longitudinal grooves and a stop pin in one extremity, a blade casing slidable in the grooved portions of said handle, a blade pivotally carried in said blade casing` a head carried by said blade casing. a spring socket disposed in one end of said handle for locking engagement with said head and means disposed in the same end of said handle and in frietional engagement with said spring socket for disengaging the same from said head.
2. In a knife comprising a hollow handle formed with oppositely disposed interior longitudinal grooves and a stop pin in one extremity, a blade easing slidable in the grooved portions of said handle. a blade earried in said blade casing, a head carried by said blade casing, lateral ears formed integral with said head, a spring socket disposed in one end of said handle for locking engagement with the ears of said head and means disposed in the same end of said handle and in frictional engagement With said spring socket for disengaging the same from said head.
3. In a knife comprising a hollow handle formed with oppositely disposed interior longitudinal grooves and a stop pin in one extremity, a blade casing slidable in the grooved portions of said handle, a. blade carried in said blade easing, a head carried 10 by said blade casing, lateral ears formed integral lwith said head, a spring socket disposed in one end of said handle for locking engagement with the ears of said head, a thumb screw extending through the last CARL UN 0 CARLSON.
