Application filed December 4, 1917. Serial No. 205,401.
To. all whom t may concern.' j
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J. Hilden, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Branch, in 4the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have" invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a window sash fastener and has for its object the. produc- 4tion of a simple and ellicient sash fastener which will automatically fit under a sash and hold the sash in an open position when the same is raised.
Another object of this invention is a production of a simple and eilicient automatic window sash lock which comprises a minimum number of parts, and which may be very cheaply and easily manufactured.
With these and other objects in View, this invention relates to certain novel construction, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the sash lock in an open position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sash lock in a closed or locked position,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the sash fastener.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that l designates a supporting plate rwhich is adapted to be secured to a window frame or other suitable support by means of suitable securing pins 2. A sash 3 is carried by the frame of the window and an automatic locking device is supported upon the supporting plate 1. This locking device comprising a locking block 3 which is provided with a substantially V-sh-aped sash engaging notch 4 upon the inner edge thereof. The block dis pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin 5, the pivot pin 5 also extending through the roller carrying plates 6. These plates 6 are secured to the opposite faces of the block 3 and carry a friction roller 7 upon their o-uter ends, which roller 7 is preferably formed of rubber or other resilient material, in this way preventing the window sash 3 from being injured by engagement thereof with the roller 7.
A spring engagement pin 8 is carried between the inner ends of the plates 6 and a coiled .Spring 9 .is Secured t0 ,this pineed is anchored upon the plate 1 by means of an anchoring pin 1O- The'4 block?) carries e Projecting finger 1 1 which linger lllcarries a'resilient buflr disk L12-which buffer disk 121s adapted ,to engage the stop pin 1.3 carried 'by the plate l4 which stop pin 13 is provided with aresilient cove ering 14.
As' shown in Figs. l and 2 a. resilient strip 15 is carried by the outer end of the block 3 within the notch 4 and a resilient strip 16 is carried within the valley portion ofthe notch i, in this way constituting an efiicient sash engaging buffer means for yieldably engaging the lower end of a window sash as shown in Fig. 2. The outer beveled edge 17 also carries a resilient buffer strip 18 for the purpose of preventing the window sash 3 from being injured as the block is swung into engaged relation with the Window sash 3. The inward swinging movement of the block 3 will be limited by means of the projecting plate 11 coming into contact with the stop 13. The spring 9 will hold the roller 7 in frictional engagement with the window sash and cause the block 3 to automatically engage the window sash 3 as soon as the Window sash 3 is raised to an open position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient device has been produced in the nature of an automatic sash fastener1 which device comprises a minimum number of parts capable of being easily and quickly installed.
l/Vhen it is desired to swing the body 3 to an open position, the operator may press downwardly upon the plate 11 and in this way draw the notch le out of engagement with the window sash 3.
What is claimed is:
1. A sash fastener comprising a body, said body provided with a sash engaging notch, yieldable buffer means mounted Within said notch, a plurality of crescent shaped plates secured to said body, the ends of said plates projecting beyond the side edges of said body, a friction roller carried. by said plates, a spring engaging the opposite ends of said plates with respect to said roller, and means for limiting the swing of said body in one direction.
2. A sash fastener comprising a body, a sash engaging roller carried by said body near one side thereof and adapted to nori Inally hold said body out of enga-gement with.
a sash, said body provided with sash engage ing means adapted to firmly engage a sash when said sash engaging roller is thrown out of engagement with a sash, means for yieldably holding said sash engaging roller in an operative position, a sto-p plate projecting beyond the lower end of said body, a yieldable bniior carried by said plate, and a stop pin aday ted to engage said yieldable buli'er for limiting the swinging .movement of said body;
3. A sash fastener of the class described comprising a body, said body provided with a substantially V-shaped notch upon one end thereof, a sash engaging roller carried by said body and adapted to normally hold said notch in an inoperative position, means for swinging said body as said roller is thrown ont of engagement with a sash, and said substantially V-shaped notch adapted to fit over the lower end of a sash for firmly supporting the same against sliding movement and also adapted to firmly hold a sash against rattling While the same is being held in an adjusted position.
el. A sash fastener comprising a body, said body provided with a sash engaging notch formed therein, yieldable buffer means mounted within said notch, a plurality of side plates carried by said body, the ends of said side plates projecting beyond the sides of said body, a friction roller carried by said plates, and means engaging the opposite ends of said plates for yieldably holding said roller in engagement with a sash.
In testimony whereof- I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
