siding at Lattimer ,ll/lines, in the county of Luzerne and State'of-Pennsylvania, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nail-sets.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a nail set adapted for operating upon the heads of nails for driving the nails into an object, the arrangement being such as to prevent the fingers of the operator from being struck by the hammer and aording an enlarged surface with which the hammer' may be readily contacted.
A further object of the device is to provide a nail set that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be readily carried in the pocket or with a set of tools adapted for instant use in providing an intermediate member between a nail to be driven and the driving hammer whereby the head of the nail may be slightly countersunk into the work if desired.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed;
In the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device illustrating the operation thereof and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
lt will be understood that my invention is adapted for use wherever a nail set may be employed such for instance as the driving of nails 10 to a point flush with the upper face of the flooring boards 11 without marring the boards or counter-sinking the nails 10 slightl. within the upper surface of the boards i found desirable.
rIhe nail set 12 which forms the subject matter of my invention broadly consists of a shank 13 having a finger ring 14 at one end thereof positioned laterally of the said shank while a substantially cartridgeshaped anvill is transversely arranged at the opposite end'of the shank 13 and lying 1n the Isame plane with the ring 14 and the longitudinal axis of the shank 13.
A substantially triangular enlargement 16 is positioned substantially centrally of the shank 13 extending in the plane of the longitudinal axis of the shank 13 and anvil 15 which provides a shoulder 17 opposite the said anvil. A flat striking end 18 is arranged at the end of the anvil 15 adj acent the enlargement 16 while the opposite end 19 of the anvil 19 is also flat but is formed of much less area than the striking face 18 by reason of the contracting of the adjacent end portion 2O of the anvil, thereby facilitating the positioning of the anvil end 19 upon a nail.
1n operation, it will be understood that the nail set is readily grasped in the hand of the operator by positioning the thumb within the ring 14; and resting the fore nger upon the shoulder 17 of the enlargement 16 with the shank 13 between the fore and index finger. rlhe smallend 19 of the anvil 15 is held upon the nail such as 10, while a hammer, not shown, is struck upon the larger end 18 of the anvil, thereby depressing the nail 10 to the desired degree. The nail engaging end 19 is preferably of less diameter vthan that of the head end of the nail so as to permit a suitable counter-` balancing of the nail during the operation of the device.
A serviceable structure is provided by means of which nails may be readily set into the work in an advantageous manner and the device possesses great strength, simplicity in structure, as well as presenting a pleasing appearance.
The anvil 15 is readily positioned upon the nail 10 in axial alinement therewith during the operation of the device in the manner described due to the pressure of the thumb and foreiinger between the ring 15 which is a band formation and the shoulder 17, which positioning is rendered possible by the fact that the ring- 14 and enlargement 16, project from one side of the shank 13 in the axial plane of the said shank and anvil.
What l claim as new is 1. A nail set comprising a shank, a
thumb-receiving ring projecting laterally lll@ 3. An article of manufacture integrally formed in a one-piece structure comprising a shanka ring, astriking anvil and an interinediately positioned enlargement carried by the shank in the axial plane of the shank, the said ring and enlargement forming oppositely positioned inger engaging portions .during the holdingoperation and the opposite ends of the anvil being adapted for seating upona nail and for. engagement by a striking member respectively.
In testimony whereof I- aiiix my signature.
