Be it known that I, CARL A. GEHNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Setters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear', and exact descriptionof the inventiomsuch as willenable others skilled in the 1art to which' it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to nail driving and setting devices. f
The object of the invention is to provide a device ofthis character which may be ad` justed for different size brads or nails and which may be used in an inverted position equally as well as in anvupright position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, 'combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Fig. 2. is a side elevation showing thenail completely driven;-Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the device; an.d\1*`ig. 4 is a transverse Asectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. o 4Referring more especially tothe drawings, 1 represents a' tubular body which is internally-threaded at 2 and 3 to receive the nail cap 4 and the limiting cap 5 as is shown in Fig. Slidably mounted in the tubular body and extending through the limiting capv5 is a plunger 6 having its rear end re duced so as to form a shoulder 7 adapted to engage with the shoulder 8 produced by the cap 5 entering'the tube 1 so as to limit the rearward movement of the plunger. ,-The forward part.' of the plunger 6 is provided -with a greatly reduced operating end 9 which isadapted to engage theheads of the nails for driving and force them to their seat.
In the foremost position of the plunger the drivingv extension 9 has its e'nd project slightly 'beyond the nail cap 4. The
shoulder 10 is formed by the. reduction of the' plunger to produce the nai-l drivingend 9 at the inner end of the tube and limits forward movement of the plunger.
In order to hold the plunger in striking position for setting nails in work overhead I providea thumb piece 11 which is provided the with outwardly beveled edges 12 adapted to engage the beveled edges 13 of the tubular Y member 1. This construction allows free inward movement of the thumb piece 11 but.
prevents outward movement beyond 'the periphery of the tube. i
In using a device for driving nails the plunger is retracted to its full extent and the f brad or nail placed in the opening 14, which passes through the nail cap 4, against the 'l 'lar body 1 and the point of the driving eX- tension 9 placed upon the head of the nail. The nail cap 4 is then forcibly held down upon the body in which the nail is seated. lThe outward end of the plunger is then forced down to the shoulder 10 or inner end ofthe nail cap 4, this limits the movement thereof and gives the required set to each nail. In using a device. for setting nails overhead the plunger is, rst pushed up'- wardly to its limit and the thumb piece 11 forced in against the plunger so as to prevent it dropping back by gravity, the device is then used as formerly described, as for setting or driving nails.
