To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH A. FAULKNER, citizen of the United States, residing at Burkmere, in the county of Faulk and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine- Hammers, of which the following. is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hammers, and as its primary object aims to provide a tack hammer of the magazine type having feeding and delivery mechanism associated therewith.
The invention as a further object contemplates mechanism such in its nature as to feed successively, the tacks acted upon, to
the delivery mechanism, the latter mechanism being manually operable to deliver the tacks, one at a time, into final position against the head of the hammer.
The above and additional objects are ac complished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accom-- panying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail referencewill be had to the accompanying draw ings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hammer device, portions thereof being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the delivery mechanism; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating the formation of one of the feeding tube terminals.
Referring now to the drawings by numerale, 1 designatesthe hammer handle and'2 the head, the former being hollow and closed at one end, the said closed end forming an abutment for one end of a spring 3 arranged therein. The opposite end of the handle 1, at a point adjacent the hammer head 2 is open, as indicated at l, said opening forming a passage way through which the tacks or small nails acted upon are successively fed in a manner to be hereinafter fully described.
lVithin hollow handle 1 a feed tube 5 is arranged, said tube extending from the closed end of the handle to a point adjacent the opening a and having arranged therein a suitable disk or plate 6 against which the opposite end of the spring 3 abuts. Tube 5, as illustrated in Fig. 2, is constricted as at 7 to form an auxiliary tubular extension 8 within which the head of the tacks acted upon are fitted, the shanks of the said tacks extending through the constricted portion 7 of the tube, preferably as shown in the said Fig. 2, the auxiliary tube 8 serving as a guide for the said tacks and maintaining the same in proper position to be acted upon by the delivery mechanism as will appear hereinafter. Auxiliary tube 8 extends beyond the feed tube 5, said auxiliary tube being curved to pass through the opening 4. as indicated at 9 terminating at a point heneath the hammer head and adjacent the striking surface thereof.
Pivoted as at 10 to the curved extension of auxiliary tube 9, is a retaining element designated as an entirety by the numeral 11, said element forming an abutment for the tacks acted upon to hold the said tacks against movement by reason of the pressure brought to bear thereupon through the instrumentality of spring 3. Element 11 is shaped as illustrated in Fig. 2 to form extensions overlapping the slot 12 formed in the auxiliary tube, the said extensions being provided with beveled edges designated respectively 13 and 14;. Said element 11 is oscillated upon its pivot point 10 to provide for the passage of the tacks, the tacks acted upon first engaging bevel edge 13, in which event said element 11 is oscillated in the opposite direction and the tacks made to engage beveled edge lt, in which position said tacks are so arranged relatively to the delivery mechanism as to be automatically carried into final position against the striking surface of the head. Said delivery mechanism in its preferred embodiment comprises a suitable frame 15 arranged to straddle the hammer head 2, said frame being pivoted as at 16 to the said head. An extension 17 is integral with the frame, said extension having attached as at 18 to its free end, a rod 19, said rod being attached at its oppo site end as indicated at 20 to an operating lever 21 pivoted as at 22 exteriorly of the handle 1 preferably at a point intermediate the opening Q and the closed end of the handle. A spring 23' is also secured at one end to the extension 17, the opposite end of the.
spring being made fast to the hammer head 2, Spring fingers 24, disposed in parallel spaced relation, are secured to'the frame 15 and upon actuation of said frame, moved into engagement with the shank of the tack acted upon, the engagement between the said spring fingers and the said tack serving to grasp the latter in a manner sufficiently firm to holdand carry the said tack into final position as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. An' arm 25 is also secured in any suitable manner to the frame 15, said arm terminating in a head portion 26 movable, upon actuation of the delivery mechanism into engagementfwith the head of the tack acted upon as shown in Fig. 3, said head, together "with the fingers 2a firmly holding the tack until forced home by a blow delivered through operation of the hammer. The free end of auxiliary feed tube 9 is slotted as indicated at 27, said slot forming away within which arm 25 operates to provide for the arrangement of the head 26 over' the head of the tack acted upon, while the-slot 12'is widened at a point adjacent the sl'ot27, preferably as indicated at 28 to provide for the operation of the spring fingers 24:. Operation is substantially as follows: Feed tube 5 is first filled with the tacks to be acted upon, the said tube when being filled, causing spring 3 to be compressed.
- vTension of said spring 3 is sufficient to deliver the tacks successively against retaining element 11. Oscillation of said element in one direction will provide for the engagement of the said tacks, one at a time, with the beveled edge 13 of the said element and, upon oscillation of the element in the opposite direction, the beveled edge 1 1; the same being returned then to its normal position, serves as an abutment for the next tack to be acted upon, thereby holding the said tack in aposition ready to be subsequently moved into final position through continued or subsequent oscillation of element 11. lhe tack acted upon having been moved into the position indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, operating lever 21 is actuated moving frame 15 1 about its pivot point 16 and spring fingers 26 and arm 25 into engagement therewith. Said frame 15 when actuated, will swing the tack acted upon into the position indicated in Fig. 1, in which position a blow upon the head thereof will provide forthe driving of the tack in a manner common to the art.
The finger 2% being highly resilient, it is evident that the same may be withdrawn from engagement with the head of the tack, the latter having been partially driven into the material acted on so that the outward pull, necessary to disengagement of the tack and fingers, would not dislodge the former.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is apparent that the feeding mechanism is automatic in its operation; that spring 23 automatically moves fingers 2d and arm 25 into engagement with the tack to be driven, the same having been moved into final. position by actuation of element 11; and that by the operation of lever 21, frame 15 is swung into the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, whenrequired, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a magazine hammer, a hammer head, a handle therefor, a delivery frame pivoted to the hammer head, an extension mounted enthe frame, spring fingers carried by the frame, said extension and said fingers being engageable with the tacks acted upon one at a time, means operable from a point on the hammer handle to oscillate the delivery frame, said extension and the said fingers adapted to carry the tacks one at a time into a position to be struck by the hammer head, spring means operating automatically to return the frame into engagement with the successive tacks acted upon, and means comprising an oscillatable plate movableto suce'essively position the tacks acted upon, for engagement with said extension and said fingers, as and for the purpose set forth.
