Description
No. 749,544. PATENTED JAN. 12, 1904.

PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.-
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,544, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed September 23, 1903. Serial No. 174,280. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ERMEN- TROUT, a citizen of the United States, residing itself to the object to be operated upon or en- The invention is fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side View, Fig. 2 a plan View,
and Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional View, of
my wrench.
1 is the operating-handle and is closed at its rear end by means of a removable cap or plug 2, to which is formed a rod 3, which extends through the said handle its entire length. The forward. end of the handle is formed with a jaw 4, having angled inner faces 5 and 6, and
a toothed rack 7 is fdrmed along the under edge of the handle portion on either side just behind the jaw. A sliding grip 8 fits loosely over the handle and closes up the opening to the hollow handle, protecting its operating parts. This grip carries a wheel 9, mounted between lugs 10,,at its front end. This wheel 9 is formed with peripheral serrationsaround its central and greatest diameter and has gearteeth 11 cut into its smaller diameter on either side of the serrated portion. These teeth 11 engage the tooth-rack 7 of the handle. An inwardly-extending lug 12 is formed on the grip 8 immediately behind the wheel 9, which lug engages and slides on the rod 3, said rod acting as a guide for the grip. A coiled spring 13 surrounds this rod 8 and rests against the cap or plug 2 at one end and the lug 12 at the other end.
When it is desired to engage an object with my wrench, the grip is drawn back along the handle, the spring 13 compressing itself and jaw placed about the object. The grip is then released and the spring 13 will return it until the-serrated periphery of the wheel 9 engages said object. The object so engaged will be held securely and prevented from slipping, as the wheel 9 cannot easily revolve, being held in position by reason of the gearteeth and rack, together with the action of the spring.
The wheel 9 is removably mounted in its lugs and can be readily removed, if required, for repairs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench comprising a hollow handle, a removable plug closing the rear end thereof, a guide-rod formed on said plug and extending the entire length of the handle, a jaw formed on the front end of said handle, toothed racks formed on the under side of said handleirnmediately behind said jaw, a sliding grip loosely mounted on said handle and closing the handle-opening, a wheel having its larger diameter serrated peripherally and its smaller diameter formed with gear-teeth removably mounted on said grip, an inwardly-extending lug formed on said grip and engaging said guide-rod, and a coiled spring mounted on said guide-rod.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ERMENTROUT. Witnesses:
ED. A. KELP, GEO. M. MILLER.
