To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD E. A. DE Bow, citizen of th e United States, residing at Bradley Beach, in the county of.Mon-' mouth and State of New Jersey, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Sets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to carpenters tools, and particularly to nail sets.

The object of my invention is to reduce to a minimum the splitting and marring of woodwork when the woodwork is being removed for repairs. IVhen it is desired to remove woodwork it is necessary to drive the nails holding the woodwork in place entirely through the work so as to permit the removal of the wood without splitting or marring it. The nails are driven through the piece of wood by means of nail sets. The ordinary nail set has a shank which is tapered adjacent one end, this tapered shank being perfectly smooth from the greatest diameter of the taper down to the smallest idiameter thereof. When a nail-set of this character is driven into a piece of woodwork to force the nail through the woodwork it is diflicult to withdraw it. It is necessary to hammer it or work it from side to side, there by making a relatively large hole in the woodwork before the nail-set can be liberated.

The object of my invention is to provide a nail-set so formed that it may be removed without working it from side to side and thereby enlarging the hole made by the set and by the nail. Forthis purpose I have devised the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an enlarged view of a nail-set constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.

Corresponding and like parts are referred .to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

Referring to these drawings 2 designates the shank of a nail-set which is cylindrical in form and is preferably knurled, the upper end of the nail-set being smooth as at 3. Below the knurled portion of the shank 2 the shank is tapered as at 4. The lower extremity of the set is slightly concaved as at 5 to form a seat for the nail-head.

The upper end of the nail-set is provided with a transverse handle bar 8 which is so disposed as not to interfere with the driving in of the nail-set and which at the same time will form a handle whereby the nail-set may be held and also form a handle whereby the nail set may be unscrewed after it is driven in.

The operation of my invention will be obvious to those skilled in the art of carpentry.

When it is desired to drive a nail into a piece of wood so that its head shall be beof the wood, the nail-set is used in the ordinary manner, the concaved end 5 being placed in contact with the head of the nail. When it is desired to drive the nail entirely through the" wood, however, so as to permit the removal of the wood without splitting or marring it, the end of the nail-set is held against the head ofthe nail and the nail set is driven inward driving the nail in through the wood to be removed. Thus, for instance if the plank to be removed is an inch in thickness the nail set will be driven into the plank one inch. When it is desired to remove the nail set it is only necessary to rotate it, which will cause engage the wood surrounding the nail set and the nail set may be readily removed. The opening through which the nail set is removed will be only as large as the opening formed by the nail set and will not be enlarged by working the nail set laterally as would ordinarily be the case with a nail-set unprovided with the screw sept. 29, 1914..

of thetapered portion 4 threads 6. The cross bar 8 at the butt end of the set not only permits the set to be rotated to thus remove it but also acts as a guard for the fingers, protecting them from injury when hammering the nail-set in.

The advantages of my invention will be apparent from what has gone before, and while I have illustrated a nail set having a certain definite form I wish it to be understood that the principle of my invention might be applie to nail sets having other forms.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is havinga shank tapered adjacent one end,

the butt end of the tapered portion being of the same diameter as the body of the nail set, said shank beingscrew threaded along the tapered portion thereof, said screw threads being relatively shallow.
