Description

KMMM G. P. SCHM|DT.

APPLICATION FILED SEPT-22. 1913.
1,260,711 I Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
, Gonrnn'z r. SCHMIDT, on NEW YORK, 1v. Y.
Tor.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented plan 26, 1918 Application filed September 22,1913. Serial No. 791,038.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY P. SCHMIDT,
- a citizenofthe United States, residing at the borough of the Bronx, city of New York, in the county of Bronx andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops, of which the following is a specificatiom'reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in toys-and more particularly has reference to rotating toys and for the purpose of this description is illustrated and set forth more especially in its application to a top.
In the accompanying-drawings I have illustrated in Figure 1 a plan view of a top embracing features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, partly'in vertical cross section, on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is another plan view illustrating a modification, and Fig. 4 is another view, partly in cross section, on the line M of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is another cross section illustrating modifications, and Fig; 6 is a plan view of another form of top showing several disks or platforms. Fig. 7 is a view, partly in vertical cross section, on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a view, partly in cross section illustrating another modification, and Fig. 9 is aplan view illustrating the body portion or top with radial slots or openings. Fig. 10 is a similar view showing circular openings and Fig. 11 is a plan view of the finger piece or knob by which the toy is spun or rotated, the same showing the finger piece 7 or knob as it appears after being stamped out of the blank, and Fig. 12 shows the same in perspective completely formed ready to be secured in the disk of the top. Figs. 13 and 14 show a dome. form of structure with suitable ports or openlngs by which the interior color combinations may be observed. Fig. 15 shows modified bearing for the disk, and Fig. 16 modified method of connecting the disks.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, the body portion or disk 13 to which the finger piece or knob is secured is preferably cut away in segments as illustrated by the reference character 14; thus exposing the lower disk or plate 15 upon which suitable colors or other caricatures may be printed or formed. 16 is a suitable ring or weight serving to balance and store up sufficient energy to keep the top spinning for a long time. As shown, it will be observed that the plate 15 isfcurled around the outsideof the ring 16 thus securely holding thesame and is cut away at the center as indicated by the reference character 17 to allow thepedestal or standard 18 to pass through the same to support the top while spinning. This it Wlll be observed is provided with a suitable cap such as 19 into which the peg 20 is seated. This peg is pressed out of the body portion of disk 13; thus making the same integral therewith, and the spinning knob or handle'indicated by the reference character 21 shown to better advantage in Figs. 11 and. 12, is preferably stamped out of sheet metal as shown in Fig. 11 having suitable corrugations such as 22 and is then formed as shown in perspective in Fig. 12, the tongue or fingers 23 being adapted to pass through the disk 13 and to be bent thereunder securing the finger piece as shown. The lower disk 15 it will be observed is provided with suitable fingers or lips such as 24 which are adapted to pass through the periphery of the body portion 13; thus securing the two plates or disks securely together.
In the modificationsshown in Figs. 3 and 4: it will be observed that the lower plate 15 preferably passes upwardly outside of the periphery of the upper plate 13, around the weight 16' thus securely interlocking the combination, and in the modification shown in Fig. 5 it will be observed that the upper plate 25 preferably curves inwardly at the base as shown at 26; thus securely holding or locking the under plate 27 as shown, but of course the plates 1315 or the plates 2527 may be relatively rotated while in their interlocked position.
In Figs. 6 and 7 are shown a multi-deck form of top, that is to say three disks or plates 28, 29 and 30 are shown, the upper plate 28 being cut away as indicated by the reference character 31 and the lower plate being cut away as indicated by the reference character 32; thus enabling the child to see the segments 33, 34 and 35 of the center plate as well as the segments 36, 37 and 38 of the upper late and at the same time the lower plate t rough the openings 39. By this arrangement very pretty designs and color effects may be observed. By reference to Fig. 7 it will be seen that the intermediate plate 29 is secured to the upper plate 28 by suitable means such as the fingers 40 and the lower plate 30 to the intermediate plate 29 by similar means such as the finger-s41. Of course any suitable provision may be made so as to secure these plates so that they may be relatively rotatable; thus making it possible to change the color eifect in the toy.
Inthe modification shown in Fig. 8 the lower plate 42 it will be observed is provided with fingers such as 43 which engage the upper plate 44. Any of these plates may, if preferable be provided with radial slots or openings-such as 45 shown in Fig. 9 or holes arranged spirally as shown at 46in Fig. 10, but of course the particular shape or arrangement of the openings or the plates, or their combination, is left to the discretionof the manufacturer, and it will be readily understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit ofthe invention as claimed.
In the modification shown in Fig. 15 it will be observed that the bearing surface of the top which may be either the upper or lower disk or plate thereof, may be indented as shown to receive the top of the pedestal 'upoirwhich the top may be spun. In the modification shown in Fig. 16 the upper disk or plate of the top 50 may be secured to the lower plate or disk 51 by a suitable peripheral flange or ring such as 52 within which the weight 53 may be seated as shown or the ring or flange 52 may be formed as a continuation of the upper plate 50.
Of course it will be, understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1-. A spinning top comprising a peg and finger piece in alinement therewith, disks.
away to expose portions of the lower of said disks, caricatures upon the lower of said disks and a peripheral weight between said peripheral Weight between said disks, said disks being adapted to be rotated relatively. In testimony whereof l-hereunto signature in the presence of two witnesses. GODFREYP. SCHMIDT.
