(N0 MOdel) Y GAME APPARATUSl mnmm I'IIIIIIINII IIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIII HIIIIIIIII IIHIIIIIIL IIINIIHII Nrrn STATES PATENT FFIcR.
HERBERT GARDNER, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO.
GAME APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,53 6, dated March 12, 1895.
Application tiled March 16, 1894.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT GARDNER, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in thel county ot El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Appara tus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of a new kind of game having, in many respects, the characteristics of dominos, but
which will be far more interesting, instructive and enjoyable.
A further object of myinvention is to provide each of the numbered blocks with certain colors which will be indicative of their respective values, so as to aid the players in more readily discerning and selecting the blocks, and in teaching them to more quickly read colors.
A still further object of my invention is to provide means which will, in playing the game, tend to improve the memory.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiarly formed blocks bearing colors and numbers, and adapted to be arranged and played in the manner more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, represents the positions of the men or dominos when the game has been playedand nished; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the vertical post employed, showing the way in which the men or dominos are arranged on the base, and around the post; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the dominos, the dividing line in the center separating the colors; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of a covering ring which is adapted to be placed over the layers of matched dominos.
a represents a vertical post made of wood and turned in the form of a cylinder. This post is mounted on or supported by the circular base 2.
Themen or dominos are denoted by the reference letter c, and all are alike in size, and
Serial No. 503,946. (No model.)
shape so that a description ot' one will suffice. These men are adapted to be matched and placed around the post as shown in Fig. 2, and in order that they may iit the curved circumference of the post and at the same time match at their ends, I rst cut them out in the form of a diamond, then form arc-shaped notches d in the opposite sides thereof. These notches permit either side of the blocks to be fitted against the post so that the operation of matching can be easily performed. In addition to numbering each half` of the upper side of each of the blocks, either by gures, dots o r otherwise, I give a color to each ot' said halves, and each color represents a number, as for instance the half numbered 1, is colored blue, and its other halt' which is numbered 2, is colored red, and so on. In this manner the player will become so used to coupling a color with a number that he will place blue against blue, and redl against red, dac., mechanically, and thus acquire a ready perception and knowledge of colors.
In addition to improving the faculties for perceiving colors quickly, I provide means for cultivating the memory, and these consist of numbered rings or covers e provided with a circular aperture f, and a flange g. Each ring bears on its top a band h, which is given a solid color such as blue, red, green, dac., to correspond with the colors on the blocks, and each band is numbered in harmony with its color. Thus green is numbered 3, and red 2. These rings are adapted to be placed over each set of dominos after the latter have `been arranged around the post and when so placed they completely cover the numbers and colors, thus leaving the player the necessity of memorizing the total amount of points gained.
The construction of the various parts comprising the game having been set forth, I will now proceed to describe its operation.
The rings and blocks are shuflled by placing face downward on the table, and mixing them about so that the exact location of any block or ring is unknown to players. In playing, the first four blocks or first circle, is played on the table, color up. When the circle of blocks on the table is completed, a ring is placed on the circle, covering it. Then another circle of blocks is begun on the ring, iitting them against the flange around. the hole Ido of the ring. When the circle of blocks is completed, another ring is played, and so continues until the game is nished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A domino game provided with men shaped to be arranged in the form of a circle, in combination with rings adapted to be alternately placed upon the men, substantially as described.
2. A domino game comprising a number of rings having colored surfaces and bearing numbers, in combination with men having one or more colors and numbers on their faces, and provided with a conformation which enables them to be arranged in the form of a circle lupon said rings, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
3. A game apparatus comprising a vertical post a series of rings, and a set of men to be used in conjunction with said rings, and formed to embrace the post when assembled, in the manner and for the purpose, substantially as described.
4. A game apparatus provided with a Vertical post, in combination with a set of numbered men having segmental recesses in their Sides, and adapted when assembled to embrace the post, substantially as described.
5. A game apparatus provided with numbered men having pointed ends c, and intermediate segmental recesses cl, whereby the men, when assembled, will leave a central opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT GARDNER.
