PARIS Hf WHEELER, or WASHINGTON,
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION formngpart of Letters Patent No. 447,418,4dated March 3, 1891.
'o'aZZ whom, it' may concern,- l
Be it known thatI, PARIS H. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles; and I do declare thefollowing to be-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, Which form a part of this specification. e This inventlon relates to certain new and useful improvements in puzzles; andit relates more particularly to that class of games a series of marbles or other movable objects are adapted to be moved about upon aspecially-prepared board or table, the object sought being to eiect a certain relative arrangement of the movable objects, the movements of which are governed by special rules or regulations.
The present invention4 has for its object to provide a new and'useful puzzle of the character described.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the ot' the board or table, `in Which Ia series of annular spaces of different colors are arranged one Within the other, each of the said spaces being provided at equidistant intervals witlfconcaved pocketsor receptacles, the number of pockets in each of the sections being equal and the center section or space being provided with a central pocket in additionto the pockets in the uniform series. y l
' The invention consists, further, in the use, in connection Witlf the board or table men-A tioned, of marble corresponding in color with the colors ofthe sections of the board and corresponding in number `\vith the number of pockets in the regular series of pockets upon the'several sectionsor colors upon the board.
Th'einvention isclearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters ofv reference marked thereon form a part .Y of this specication, like letters of reference indicating'like partsthroughout the several views, and in which drawingsvFigure l is a plan view of a puzzle embody pockets in Applicatiortze-.tnov'ember 1I, 1890. serial No. 371,095. (ramdam ing' my invention, the marbles being shown in the positions in which they are placed in commencing the solution of the puzzle. Fig. 2 is a similar View, in which the marbles are shown in the positions which they should oc cupy when the game or puzzle has been solved. p
Fig. 3 is a section through the board.
Reference now being had to the details of the invention by letter of reference, A designates a board or tabla-Which is preferably circular, as shown, and B, C, and D represent annular sections or divisions of the surface of the board, the several divisions being of different colors. For instance, We will suppose that the outer ring .or division B is red, the next adjacent section C is White, and the central section D is blue.
Each of the sections B, C, and D-is provided at equidistant intervals of its circumference with lconcaved pockets a, a, the number of each series being the same, and in the present instance being shown as six, though the number4 may be varied, if desired, it' being essential only that the number in each of the divisions of the board should be the same.
In addition to the regular series of pockets a the blue section D at the center of the board is provided With'a central pocket b.
In arranging the'marbles E, F, and G for the solution of the puzzle, the white marbles E are placed in the pockets in thered or outer section, the blue marbles F are placed `1n the l pockets in the next inner or White section,
and the red marbles@ are placed in the pookets in the Iinner or blue section D.-
The player first takes a red marble out of its pocket and places it in the pocket bin the center of the board. lle then transfers a White marble to the pocket in the section D which has been vacated. A blue marble is in turn then placed in the pocket vacated by the White marble being l removed, and the movement of the marbles is thus continued iin regular ordenthe order of movement of the marbles being red, White, and blue, and this order being continued until all of the red -v marbles have been transferred to the pockets within the red space upon the board, the white I marbles tothe white space, and the blue marbles to the blue space, the central pocket 11 being left vacant.
" other rules.
` made square or,of any desired number of nection with a series of marbies or other movandfprefer such form, itis evident that the consisting in the division of the board into a.
In order to vary the game, any one of the several pockets upon the board may be se-I lected as the one to be left vacant, when the marbles are arranged, instead of the central pocket; or, the marbles may be arranged differently and their movement regulated by While I have shown the board as circular,-
general form of the board or its sections may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention-as, for inst-ance, it may be sides, and with colored sections corresponding, the essential feature of -my invention series of divisions each having either a different color orsoine distinguishing mark, and each provided with a series of pockets with an extra pocket at the center of the board, in conable objects corresponding in color or otherdistinguishing mark corresponding with the divisions of the board.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
l. In a puzzle of the character described., a board or table having its surface divided into a series of sections or divisions, each section or division having a separate color or other distinguishing mark, and each provided with a series of pockets, the number of pockets in each section being equal, and an extra pocket being provided in the center of the board 01' table, of a series of movable objects bearing colors or other distinguishing marks corresponding with the colors,l or marks of the sections 'of the board or table, 'substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a puzzle of the character described, a
Aboard 'or table the surface of which is `divided into a series of divisions or spaces arranged one within the other, each of the divisions or sections being of a diierent color, and each provided with aseries of pockets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The herein-described puzzle, thev same consisting of a board or table the surface of which is divided into a series ofl divisions or sections arranged one within the other, and
, each having a different color or other distinguishing mark, and each provided with a series of pockets, the central section having au extra pocket at the central point upon the board, and a series of -marbles or other movable objects having colors or other distinguishing marks corresponding with the colors or marks of the sections of the board or table. substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two'witnesses. PARISH. WHEELER.'
